This work is an account of the valuations of all ecclesiastical benefices who paid the first fruits and tenths annates. The work was originally issued in 1711 and was compiled by John Ecton. Seven editions of the work appeared between 1723 and 1796 under the title 'Liber Valorum et Decimarum'. Bacon changed the name of this work to 'Liber Regis' before making his own additions. This work has been published without any mention of Ecton. Ecton's preface remains in-tact with no revision on the part of Bacon. The Gentleman's Magazine for 1786 and 1787 discussed this plagiarism in both issues. Ecton was employed in the first-fruits department of the office of Queen Anne's Bounty where he was the receiver of the tenths of the clergy. This work is a comprehensive list of the Benefices in England and Wales that are charged with the payment of the First Fruits and Tenths. Each Diocese is presented in alphabetical order. The First Edition of Bacon's 'Editorial' of this work which has a few additions following Ecton's original work. Bacon was a British clerk and editor who spent much of his life in the first-fruits department of Queen Anne's Bounty office. ESTC No. T142990. In a full calf binding . Although best remembered for his contribution to natural philosophy Francis Bacon 1561-1626 was an English statesman and philosopher who served as both Solicitor General and Lord Chancellor. After being made Solicitor General in 1607 and thereafter was at or near the heart of James’ administration although high office was risky in a Jacobean administration and bacon would be impeached in 1621 and spend time as a prisoner in the Tower. This collection contains 149 letters written by the statesman philosopher scientist and author Francis Bacon. The editor Robert Stephens 1665-1732 was Royal Historiographer and one of the founders of the Society of Antiquaries. He spent 12 years editing theseletters. This copy like most is lsacking the dedication pages which were cancelled before the book was published on account of the death of William III. “Epistle dedicatory†signed Robert Stephens leaf A2IS wanting in many copies INCLUDING THIS ONE as it was cancelled following the death of William III. Bacon the compiler of this massive volume was rector of All-Saints Parish in Frederick County and domestic chaplain in Maryland to the Right Honorable Frederick Lord Baltimore. Bacon worked on the LAWS for thirteen years and publication took an additional four years to complete. It is considered to be the most important legal work published in the colony covering the years 1637 through 1763 and supplemented by extensive indices. The work is also noted for its typography the quality of the printing and the first appearance of the seal of Maryland on the titlepage. In A HISTORY OF PRINTING IN COLONIAL MARYLAND 1686-1776 Lawrence C. Wroth describes the work as "not only the most important of the legal publications of the Province of Maryland but it happens also to have been a specimen of typography which was not exceeded in dignity and beauty by any production of an American colonial press.In scholarly and systematic arrangement as well as in accuracy and completeness it excelled any of the former bodies of law which the Province had possessed.As an easy and dependable guide to the store-house of Maryland history it remains still without rival."
