The Tauchnitz edition of Ouida's charming novel set in France in an interesting binding with a hand drawn artichoke flower to the front board. The Tauchnitz edition of this charming novel following a sixteen year old orphan as she walks from Brussels to Paris.By Maria Louise Rame written under the pseudonym Ouida.This edition was published by Bernhard Tauchnitz. Tauchnitz started his 'Collection of British Authors' in 1842 and it continued for almost exactly 100 years. By breaking with the European practise of ignoring British copyright law Tauchnitz was a driving force behind international agreements on international copyright protection. The goodwill he gained from British authors enabled him to be the principal continental publisher of English language works. He was often sent early proofs and so was able to first publish at the same time or very soon after the British publisher.Sixteen pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In an amateur half calf binding with paper to the boards with a hand drawn artichoke flower to the front board. Externally generally smart. Some marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the spine and extremities. Front endpaper is detached but present. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some odd spots. A first edition copy of this novella by the prolific author Maria Louise Ramé under her pseudonym Ouida. The first edition of this uncommon work in a quarter calf binding with cloth boards. Binder's stamp of Birdsall & Son Northampton to the front paste down. Bookplate of the English Army officer and peer Edward George Bootle-Wilbraham 2nd Earl of Lathom 1864-1910 to the front paste down. Maria Louise Ramé 1839-1908 known by the pseudonym Ouida was a successful English novelist. She wrote more than 40 novels as well as short stories children's books and essays. In this novella a Northern European dissident is exiled to an Italian community of thieves and squatters in which he finds companionship with a local peasant woman. In a quarter calf binding. Externally generally smart though faded to the boards with rubbing to the joints and spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for spotting to the first and last few pages.
