Two ink names on upper wrapper some smudging and creasing clean split at toe of spine and short closed tear at lower edge; a good copy. Sheet music likely associated with the 1918 film based on Empey's bestselling 1917 book recording his experiences as an American serving with the 1st London Regiment of the Royal Fusiliers after having enlisted at the end of 1915. He was wounded in action at the Battle of the Somme and returned home. The photograph of Empey from the books dust jacket in uniform feigning a bayonet charge is reproduced on the upper wrapper of this sheet music. After a somewhat controversial stint as a propagandist for the US's entry into the war he went on to a career in Hollywood and pulp writing playing the lead role in the film adaptation of his book. Spine tips lightly rubbed; cloth very faintly rubbed visible only when you turn the book to catch the light. In a lovely near fine dust jacket -- spine just a bit sunned. <br/><br/>"Butterfield 8" was made into a film in 1960; directed by Daniel Mann starring Elizabeth Taylor and Laurence Harvey. Taylor then 28 years old won her first Academy Award for her performance in a leading role. According to MGM records the film made $6.8 million in the US and Canada and $3.2 million in other countries resulting in a profit to the studio of $1857000 -- making it MGM's biggest hit of the year. Elizabeth Taylor and her then-husband Eddie Fisher hated the film referring to it as "Butterball Four." Her famous response to the success of the film made under protest in order to fulfill a contractual obligation to MGM before being allowed to depart to 20th Century Fox to make Cleopatra: "I still say it stinks." Elizabeth reportedly hated the film because at the time of its making the studio was tying her down to the project and in response to her "stealing" Eddie Fisher away from his previous wife Debbie Reynolds U.S. fans were referring to Taylor as a "slut" and a "homewrecker" descriptions which also describe her character Gloria. The letter is dated June 20 1960 in pencil and in it O'Hara expresses his dislike of the public remarks made by Mark Robson the director of the 1960 film though Robson's name is not mentioned. It seems Robson "sounded off" in the Long Island Tribune June 19 1960 and O'Hara took offense and was soon "in touch with the studio to see what can be done about shutting him Robson up." O'Hara also invites the addressees to a private screening of the film. <br/><br/>Very Good plus or better in a Very Good plus or better dust jacket. Spine ends lightly bumped a few leaves with tiny corner creases and lightly rubbing overall. A small chip at the jacket rear flap fold and light rubbing overall else Near Fine. Letter Near Fine.
