The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew Ryukyu in 1854 where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about traditional life and customs on Lew Chew Ryukyu. . (A.O.P.
