189997129Paris: Floury 1899. Toulouse-Lautrec's masterpiece of the illustrated book First edition number 84 of 100 copies only one of the most celebrated and sought-after of all livres d'artiste some of Lautrec's finest illustrations and the prototype of nearly all modern bestiairies Garvey. Lautrec and Jules Renard met first in 1894. The artist asked to illustrate some of the charming and witty portraits of animals and his first sketches were made at the Jardin d'Acclimatation and Jardin des Plantes in 1896. The last two illustrations printed were executed by Lautrec while he was a patient at the Neuilly clinic of Dr Sémalaigne. Renard's Histoire naturelles "contains some of Toulouse Lautrec's most refined draftsmanship and with Yvette Guilbert it is considered one of the masterpieces of the illustrated book. It was Lautrec who requested the pleasure of illustrating Renard's bestiary and Renard agreed hoping for descriptions that 'would please the animals themselves'. The two creative personalities clashed. Lautrec resented the book's limitation to mundane animals while Renard although paid homage to by a cover design of a fox objected to a number of Lautrec's drawings. Today we are amazed that it took Floury twenty years to sell out the edition of 100 copies" Donson/Gripp. Small folio 310 x 220 mm. With an original transfer lithograph to front wrapper on Japan paper and 22 throughout the text on vélin paper by Toulouse-Lautrec. Finely bound in 1973 by Pierre Lucien Martin 1913-1985 in olive green modelled calf titles to covers in raised lettering. Housed in a matching quarter calf chemise and slipcase. Foot of spine lightly rubbed with one small nick contents fresh; slipcase slightly sunned and rubbed. A finely bound copy. One and a half pages written in black ink on letterhead paper from ""Gloriette"" the writer's residence in Nièvre. Transverse fold lines inherent to mailing. Fine letter to this fellow writer alluding to Poil de Carotte: ""Je suis au moins aussi content que vous. Certes je n'avais pas oublié le manuscrit où Poil de Carotte était si bien compris - et aimé - j'avais oublié la signature."" ""I am at least as pleased as you are. Certainly I had not forgotten the manuscript where Poil de Carotte was so well understood - and loved - I had forgotten the signature."" He mentions Gabrielle Réval's book: ""Et tant mieux ; car j'ai lu les Sèvriennes et non le livre d'une amie de Poil de Carotte. L'auteur seul a plu le lecteur seul a été touché. Il y a de belles réussites vous le voyez madame."" ""So much the better; for I read the Sèvriennes and not the book of a friend of Poil de Carotte. The author alone pleased the reader alone was moved. There are beautiful successes you see madam."" Jules Renard already enjoyed considerable success at this time: ""Il me répugnerait de jour au vieux maître sachez pourtant que j'ai déjà reçu bien des livres écrit bien des lettres en quelle proportion par politesse je ne sais plus mais aucune ne fut plus spontanée que celle dont vous me remerciez aimablement."" ""It would repel me to play the old master know however that I have already received many books written many letters in what proportion out of politeness I no longer know but none was more spontaneous than the one for which you thank me kindly."" The highly laudatory letter alluded to here is preserved at the Jean Jaurès Media Library in Nevers and was written by Renard a few days before ours: ""Ce n'est pas l'auteur des Sévriennes que je remercie c'est vous. C'est grâce à vous que j'ai lu par cette froide fin de mai entre la première rose de mon jardin et les dernières flammes de ma cheminée un beau Livre."" ""It is not the author of the Sévriennes that I thank it is you. It is thanks to you that I read during this cold end of May between the first rose of my garden and the last flames of my fireplace a beautiful Book."" Complete. The binding has loss to one corner and loss of some surface cloth to the spine. loss to the corners of the front cover illustration. Some darkening to the illustration. Inside the 32 hand coloured sheets are in very good condition. There is a little darkening to the title sheet and slight handling to the edges of the sheets but overall in very nice shape. A couple of the sheets have a small Viennese bookshop stamp to the verso. Caricatures of life in Paris during the siege of Paris in 1870/71. 340 by 255mm 13½ by 10 inches. . Première édition. This has been professionally framed and so is sealed to the edges. As a result we haven't been able to examine the page outside of the mount. Sketch is 27cm x 19.5cm. Mount is 34.5cm x 27cm. The image shows a man in military uniform wearing a bicorne hat with the word "conseil" on it. He is looking sceptically over his shoulder where an image shows "interieur" and a purse over the words "Seance ou Zjaoul" To the bottom is the line "Effet de la formation du Nouveau cabinet sur le Conseil communal ou notre ville." This is probably referring to the 1857 Belgian general election which was held on 10 December 1857 and was the first full general election since 1848. It was called by royal order dissolving the Chamber of Representatives. Before the election Liberals held a majority in the Senate and Catholics held a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. The election resulted in a victory for the Liberal Party which won 70 out of 108 seats in the Chamber of Representatives gaining a majority in both chambers of parliament. Charles Rogier became both the premier and the Interior minister perhaps referenced with the word "Interieur" to the top. Jules Renard 1833-1926 known by the pseudonym Draner was a Belgian painter illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92. Première édition - une esquisse / caricature originale que l'on croit signée et dessinée par Renard / Draner. Intitulée "Croquades Liégeoises No 13" en haut de l'esquisse celle-ci est dessinée et signée au crayon avec le titre et le texte en dessous à l'encre noire. Il s'agit probablement d'une référence aux élections générales belges de 1857 qui se sont tenues le 10 décembre 1857 et qui ont été les premières élections générales complètes depuis 1848. Elles ont été convoquées par un arrêté royal dissolvant la Chambre des représentants. Avant les élections les libéraux détenaient la majorité au Sénat et les catholiques la majorité à la Chambre des représentants. Les élections se sont soldées par une victoire du parti libéral qui a remporté 70 des 108 sièges de la Chambre des représentants obtenant ainsi la majorité dans les deux chambres du parlement.
