18654564Paris: Dusacq et cie 1865. A lovely copy of this hand coloured lithograph abstracted from Draner's Types Militaires. It shows a member of the Belgian civil guard fishing in his uniform holding an attractive green umbrella. The print itself is clean and bright signed in the plate to the lower right hand side. The surrounding card is a little darkened with light foxing some staining to the top edge and some small edge wear. Slight repair to one edge. Image is 29cm x 20cm. Plate is 44.5cm x 31cm. The Front and rear boards are detached and there is no spine. A little rubbing to the edges and staining to the rear board. Inside are the title plus 31 plates. Complete Plate 12 shows a balloonist attempting to relieve the siege. Some darkening to the illustration. Inside the 32 hand coloured sheets are in very good condition. There is a little darkening to the title sheet and slight handling to the edges of the sheets but overall in very nice shape. The title has a tear and a couple of small nicks repaired with archival tape. Caricatures of life in Paris during the siege of Paris in 1870/71. 340 by 255mm 13½ by 10 inches. . Première édition. Complète. Chemise cartonnée avec un double de la page de titre collé sur la première planche. Les planches avant et arrière sont détachées et il n'y a pas de dos. Un peu de frottement sur les bords et des taches sur la planche arrière. A l'intérieur se trouvent le titre et 31 planches. Complet. La planche 12 montre un aérostier tentant de soulager le siège. Les illustrations sont un peu plus sombres. A l'intérieur les 32 feuilles colorées à la main sont en très bon état. Il y a un peu de noircissement sur la feuille de titre et une légère manipulation sur les bords des feuilles mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. Le titre présente une déchirure et quelques petites entailles réparées avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. One and a half pages written in black ink on letterhead paper from ""Gloriette"" the writer's residence in Nièvre. Transverse fold lines inherent to mailing. Fine letter to this fellow writer alluding to Poil de Carotte: ""Je suis au moins aussi content que vous. Certes je n'avais pas oublié le manuscrit où Poil de Carotte était si bien compris - et aimé - j'avais oublié la signature."" ""I am at least as pleased as you are. Certainly I had not forgotten the manuscript where Poil de Carotte was so well understood - and loved - I had forgotten the signature."" He mentions Gabrielle Réval's book: ""Et tant mieux ; car j'ai lu les Sèvriennes et non le livre d'une amie de Poil de Carotte. L'auteur seul a plu le lecteur seul a été touché. Il y a de belles réussites vous le voyez madame."" ""So much the better; for I read the Sèvriennes and not the book of a friend of Poil de Carotte. The author alone pleased the reader alone was moved. There are beautiful successes you see madam."" Jules Renard already enjoyed considerable success at this time: ""Il me répugnerait de jour au vieux maître sachez pourtant que j'ai déjà reçu bien des livres écrit bien des lettres en quelle proportion par politesse je ne sais plus mais aucune ne fut plus spontanée que celle dont vous me remerciez aimablement."" ""It would repel me to play the old master know however that I have already received many books written many letters in what proportion out of politeness I no longer know but none was more spontaneous than the one for which you thank me kindly."" The highly laudatory letter alluded to here is preserved at the Jean Jaurès Media Library in Nevers and was written by Renard a few days before ours: ""Ce n'est pas l'auteur des Sévriennes que je remercie c'est vous. C'est grâce à vous que j'ai lu par cette froide fin de mai entre la première rose de mon jardin et les dernières flammes de ma cheminée un beau Livre."" ""It is not the author of the Sévriennes that I thank it is you. It is thanks to you that I read during this cold end of May between the first rose of my garden and the last flames of my fireplace a beautiful Book."" Gabrielle Réval was one of the co-founders of the Prix de la Vie heureuse which would later become the Prix Femina. unknown

18605293Liége: NP 1860. First edition - an original sketch / caricature believed to be signed and drawn by Renard / Draner. Entitled "L'Exposition du cercle artistique No. 5" to the top of the sketch this is drawn in pencil and signed ink with the title and text below in black ink. It is a good clean image with a touch of foxing / marking only. Now framed under an olive green passe partout and plastic protective cover. This has been professionally framed and so is sealed to the edges. As a result we haven't been able to examine the page outside of the mount. Sketch is 27cm x 19.5cm. Mount is 34.5cm x 27cm. A discarded basket is surrounded by flies and spider's webs. The commentary below states that this is a strange approach to the subject but in good faith! Jules Renard 1833-1926 known by the pseudonym Draner was a Belgian painter illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Liege he moved to Paris in 1861. He became known for his military caricatures and his work as a costume designer for theatre and opera houses in Paris. He died in Paris in 1926 at the age of 92. Première édition - une esquisse / caricature originale que l'on croit signée et dessinée par Renard / Draner. Intitulée "L'Exposition du cercle artistique No. 5" en haut de l'esquisse celle-ci est dessinée au crayon et signée à l'encre avec le titre et le texte en dessous à l'encre noire. Il s'agit d'une bonne image propre avec une touche de rousseur/marquage seulement. L'œuvre est maintenant encadrée sous un passe partout vert olive et une housse de protection en plastique. Elle a été encadrée par un professionnel et est donc scellée sur les bords. Par conséquent nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'examiner la page en dehors de l'encadrement. L'esquisse mesure 27 cm x 195 cm. Le support mesure 345 cm x 27 cm. Un panier abandonné est entouré de mouches et de toiles d'araignées. Le commentaire ci-dessous indique qu'il s'agit d'une approche étrange du sujet mais en toute bonne foi ! Jules Renard 1833-1926 connu sous le pseudonyme de Draner était un peintre illustrateur et caricaturiste belge. Né à Liège il s'installe à Paris en 1861. Il s'est fait connaître par ses caricatures militaires et son travail de costumier pour le théâtre et l'opéra de Paris. Il est mort à Paris en 1926 à l'âge de 92 ans. NP unknown
