186084915s. l. 1860. Fine. s. l. 15 juillet1860 13.50 x 21 cm une page et demi sur un double feuillet Autograph letter signed by Sainte-Beuve 1 and a half pages on a double sheet. 25 lines in black ink. Sainte-Beuve."" ""I have been very touched dear sir by your good French and by the sending of the very wise and instructive volume which is the cause of it. You remind me indeed of times already quite ancient but which what has ended could not erase from my memory: for to speak truly to you although there is much space and much interval from today to that time it often seems to me that there is emptiness: and the whirlwind of literary life of which you speak to me I hardly feel it. What strikes me is rather the contrary of the whirlwind that is to say isolation the disappearance or the little group movement. One survives oneself and drags on a little: I speak at least for myself so I am all the more sensitive. . to good testimonies like yours which attest that the past is not forgotten and that it really existed. Believe me I beg you entirely yours. Sainte-Beuve."" unknown
1850927T12Paris: Garnier Freres c1850-1880. Vellum. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". None. A fifteen volume set of the Causeries du Lundi or "Monday Chats" of French literary critic Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve in the original French. French. Complete in fifteen volumes. Mixed edition with volume fifteen being a first edition volume thirteen being a second edition and all other volumes being third editions. A series of informal essays and topical columns originally published as the author's "Monday chats" in the newspaper Le Constitutionnel. This set contains critical and biographical essays on literary topics regarding French and European authors. Sainte-Beuve provided details on an author's character background appearance education religion and friendships creating a well-rounded view of the subject before beginning his critique of their work. These factors developed his style of criticism over a wide range of genres in ancient and contemporary literature. Published weekly from 1849 to 1869 the essays proved to be very popular and were collected in two sets the fifteen-volume Causeries du Lundi originally released from 1851 to 1862 and the thirteen-volume Nouveaux Lundis originally released from 1863 to 1870. Written by Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve a French literary critic. In the original quarter paper vellum binding with marbled boards. Externally smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading and discolouration to the spine as is typical with ageing. The odd small mark to the boards with spine labels detached. Small cracks to the spine of volume fifteen. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and age toning to the endpapers. Very Good Garnier Freres hardcover
1857FGN23-C-1Paris: Garnier Freres 1857. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A series of informal essays by Sainte-Beuve the most powerful literary critic of 19th century France. Classically educated and a graduate of the University of Paris he made his way into journalism. He was thus drawn into a circle of Romantic writers and poets. In 1831 he began to contribute articles to a new periodical the Revue des Deux Mondes. It was in these that he developed his style of considering the biographical background of living writers and applying it in the exploration of their mentality. After a period of political turbulence in which he found himself at variance with the government of Louis-Phillippe Saint-Beuve returned to paris in 1849. He was asked by Louis Veron the editor of Le Constitutionnel to write a weekly article on current literary topics to appear every Monday. That was the start of this collection. The first edition was three volumes published in 1851. This set is from the definitive third edition running to 15 volumes published between 1857-62. Of those 15 collected here are volumes VII to XIII as well as the 'Table' - a general reference to the set which is bound together with some "portraits de femmes" and "portraits litteraires." According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica "prodigious research went into each 3000 word 'chat'. Saint-Beuve who wished his readers to have a well-rounded view of his subjects provided extensive data on such matters as an author's character family background physical appearance education religion love-affairs and friendships." Collated: each volume present complete. In half calf with gilt detailing to the spines. Volumes are generally a little rubbed to the extremities particularly the heads and tails of the spine. The spines are faded and show a little shelf-wear. The joints are a little tender on volume seven but still firm. Internally generally clean and bright. The exceptions consist of a little light foxing to the first few pages of volume seven to the last few pages of volume ten and the first few pages of volume twelve. The pages are untrimmed and as such the foredges are a little dirty. Generally firmly bound. Good Garnier Freres hardcover
