Published by American Publishing Co. 1867. Overall condition is good minus.</p><p>Richardson was an American journalist and a Union spy during the Civil War. He was caught and jailed in a Confederate prison from which he escaped. He wrote this book during a very turbulent time in the United States. Full title includes "From the Great River to the Great Ocean. Life and Adventure on the Prairies Mountains and Pacific Ocean 1857-1867".</p><p>All books are sold AS IS. 1896101013<p>London received by Pond on July 20 1896. 1896. Very good. - Over 125 words penned on 4 sides of 7-3/4 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide creamy white paper with attached leaf. Writing from London the American elocutionist Locke Richardson tells the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond that he's not yet able to give him a definite answer and he will be at the disposal of his agent in Cincinnati on his return. He goes on to say that he will be "glad to accept some business" that he is sure Pond will be able to send his way "Possibly you might do something for me for a series of readings in Chicago." Signed in full "Locke Richardson". Folded for mailing with Pond's red stamp at top left. There are a few ink smudges. Very good.</p><p>The American elocutionist Locke Richardson 1844-1899 was lauded for his intelligent and powerful renditions of selections from Shakespeare's plays. Richardson was once a member of the Lotos Club as well as The Players. Major Pond had managed him on previous tours in 1873 and 1874.</p> London, received by Pond on July 20, 1896.
188897591South Carolina 1888. 1888. Very good. - A 2-1/4 inch high by 3-3/4 inch wide card boldly signed "J.P. Richardson" by the Governor of South Carolina. The card is additionally annotated "Gov. So. Ca." and dated "1888" by Richardson. There is a small light brown stain to the top edge of the card and another near the bottom right corner. Very good. <p>John Peter Richardson III 1831-1899 served on the staff of Confederate Brigadier General James Cantey during the Civil War. Blue hardback cloth cover. 450mm x 340mm 18" x 13". 42pp xii plates. 42 b/w plates. 42 etchings from Richardson's original drawings. The engravings from drawings of old Newcastle by Richardson. Many of these were originally intended to illustrate a history of the town by his brother Moses Aaron Richardson. The manuscript for that work however was never completed. Each of the engravings is accompanied by a brief piece on the subject matter.There is also a short biography of the artist and a list of the 1880 location of each original drawing. Thomas Miles Richardson 1784-1847 Richardson was born of an old Tynedale family who lived for generations in the neighbourhood of Wark. Evidence of his artistic talent led him to be placed at the age of fourteen with a Newcastle engraver. The latter died very shortly afterwards and effectively interrupted Richardson's artistic career. After a brief period as a cabinet-maker he succeeded his father to the mastership of St. Andrew's School Newcastle in 1806. He continued painting in his leisure time and seven years later left the school to devote himself full-time to painting. In 1822 together with the engraver Thomas Bewick and others Richardson inaugurated the first Fine Art Exhibition in the North of England.Twice married Richardson had a large family.
