Early damp-staining to front wrapper and tidelines to the top margin of many of the leaves more prominent to the first several leaves diminishing to an unobtrusive toning to the top corner; dog-earing to the bottom corner of about 2 dozen leaves; generally a solid copy in very good condition but for the minor to moderate tidelines. <br /> <br /> This is the transcript of the infamous murder trial of Matthew Flournoy Ward in Elizabethtown Kentucky. Matt Ward was tried in the Hardin Circuit Court at Elizabethtown KY April 1854 for the murder of W. H. G. Butler. McDade explains: "Butler the principal of Louisville High School had whipped Matt Ward's younger brother. Matt demanded an apology of Butler not for the whipping but for calling the boy a liar. The apology not forthcoming words followed; and Ward having come prepared for blood shot Butler. Kentucky justice was that Ward was promptly acquitted" McDade 1042. Sabin 70981. D. Plus 3 pp. Index and 4 pp. of ads at rear.<br /> <br /> Includes a chapter on "Various Devices for Shoeing Ugly Horses" meaning vicious unruly or merely nervous horses. The author writes: "When I get a horse supposed to be vicious I approach him as quietly as possible and notice the eyes and the ears which show as plainly as words whether he is really vicious or only nervous. If vicious I give him a taste of the war bridle and if that does not work then I give him some rope along with the bridle which is sufficient in all cases I have ever met yet."<br /> <br /> Other chapters include: Preparing the Foot -- Hot or Cold Fitting Which; Contracteds Feet; Corns and How to Treat Them; Interfering and Over-Reaching; Quarter Cracks and Split Hoofs; Shoeing Knee Sprung Flat-Footed or Club-Footed Horses etc.; Docking; Tips for Trotters; Horse Physiognomy; Ox Shoeing. Owner's signature and bookplate inside; notes on title page and underlining in text. Pages themselves remain tightly bound. A much-worn but readable copy. Protestant response to a pamphlet published by Catholic authorities in Great Britain. The pamphlet was intended to clarify and defend the Church against prejudice and misunderstanding but the author of this book asserts that Catholicism and in particular the papacy is self-defeating and inherently un-Christian. Hedges heir to a particular property sharing information that a person named James Sloan had taken possession of a property that belonged to David Hedges now deceased.<br /> <br /> Richardson states that James Sloan and family has taken possession and is working a property "on the East half of Section 35 Town 13 Range 16 of the Ohio Purchase Company."<br /> <br /> "This half section.is the most valuable portion of land in those parts. because of its contiguity to the Town of Logan a fast growing Town being the County seat for Hocking county being distant only one mile.from the Town. and found on this section one of the Richest. Coal Mines.Thirdly the timber is equally valuable. Sugar Maple and Poplar to say nothing of the oak which cannot be excelled by any in the Western Country."<br /> <br /> "James Sloan and family for nearly two years.has been working this coal mine supplying Logan and other parts with coal.and timber. has been cut down without measure to supply Fishey Brick Kiln and all the stores and taverns in Logan."<br /> <br /> Richardson explains that Mr. Putnam of Marietta who paid the taxes for this property "would be willing to do anything in his power to save the property.but he has no legal authority."
