Fair. 2 volumes bound as 1 ; 23 cm.; OCLC 1507226 ; LC PR1119 .E5 no. 44-45 ; LCCN 12017832 ; red half-leather with five bands marbled endpapers ; top edge gilt; contemporary bookplate of The Newberry Library Chicago ; front and back boards loose repaired ; "Caxton's " right pleasant and goodly historie of the Four Sons of Aymon " is englisht from the French prose romance " Les Quatre Filz Aymon " which is a rendering more or less free of an ancient chanson de geste bearing the same name though more often entitled " Renaud de Montauban . " The earliest extant text of the chanson is a remaniment of the end of the 12th century. The conversion of the poem into prose was not accomplished before the close of the 14th century . None of the prose manuscripts are earlier than the 15th century . Of them the British Museum has three MSS . all in writing of the 15th century . In one a large vellum folio about 1445 A.D. the story is illustrated by nine miniatures ; in the borders of the first appear the arms of John Talbot first Earl of Shrewsbury and those of Henry VI . and his Queen Margaret of Anjou empaled . It is similar to the usual printed edition from the third chapter of that edition to the end . Another manuscript a vellum folio of the 15th century is also a prose version to which is prefixed a fragment of a metrical version of the story the text of which closely resembles that published by Bekker in his Introduction to " Fierbras " ; another metrical fragment is added at the conclusion of the prose tale which contains the adventures of Maugis how he became Pope under the name of Innocent hears Charlemagne's confession and is stifled by the Emperor in a cave near Naples . He Was A Close Personal Friend And Professional Colleague Of John Snow. On Snow's Sudden Death He Took Over The Final Editing Of Snow's Draft On Chloroform And Other Anaesthetics And Supervised Its Publication In 1858. Ward Richardson Remained A Committed Exponent Of Snow's Radical Views On The Microbial Cause Of Infectious Disease For The Rest Of His Life. He Continued And Extended Snow's Work On Inhalation Anaesthesia And Brought Into Clinical Use No Less Than Fourteen Anaesthetics Of Which Methylene Bichloride Is The Best Known And He Invented The First Double-Valved Mouthpiece For Use In The Administration Of Chloroform. He Also Made Known The Peculiar Properties Of Amyl Nitrite A Drug Which Was Largely Used In The Treatment Of Angina Pectoris And He Introduced The Bromides Of Quinine Iron And Strychnia Ozonized Ether Styptic And Iodized Colloid Hydrogen Peroxide And Sodium Ethoxide Substances Which Were Soon Largely Used By The Medical Profession. A total of 6 Parts. 2 xi 391 pages plus 7 plates Binding appears to be publishers cloth with blind stamped design quite faded and worn with amateur repair to corners and spine panel. Recent paper label on spine. Front board with gold title lettering and decorative border: "THE UNIVERSAL CODE OF SIGNALS MARRYAT RICHARDSON" also faded but readable. Front flyleaf crudely glued at the gutter first folding plate nearly torn in 2 at the fold repaired with archival tape. Binding still sound noting several signatures a bit "proud". A working man's copy and in it's original "patina'd" state. Front pastedown and endpaper publisher advertisements. Previous owner Haddock & Co St. Thomas stamped in several places another inked name/location on front flyleaf. Chips and creasing to front flyleaf no loss of text. 2 of the plates probably trimmed no apparent loss to content While there are no page numbers each section appears complete with numerical signals progressing page to page in an appropriate manner with no obvious gaps. All sections present per the "General Contents" page. While not aesthetically pleasing as a book the content signaling ship to ship was an important function in the days before other communication systems as evidenced by it's obviously used state. Cloth. This copy is dated 1861. The preface which is for the edition of 1856 notes that the original Inventor of the code of signals the late Captain Marryat produced his last edition in 1841. It further notes that six large Editions have been issued since "each greatly extended and improved". We don't know how many editions if any were produced between that 1856 edition and this 1861 edition. There is no specific edition noted in the book. A scarce title with only 6 items for this publication date in OCLC not all complete. Richardson & Company unknown
