A set complete in seven volumes of one of Samuel Richardson's colossal epistolary novels following the well known Clarissa and Pamela. The eighth edition of 1796. The History of Sir Charles Grandison was written by Richardson after many of his female friends demanded a morally good gentleman to oppose the characters of Mr Lovelace and Mr B. It was also a response to Henry Fielding's The History of Tom Jones a Foundling which parodied the morals presented in Richardson's previous novels. Following the heroic acts and life of the fictional character of Charles Grandison. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. ESTC Reference T58986 In a full marbled calf binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the spine and extremities. A minor cracking to the front joint of volume I VI and VII. The rear board of volume III is slightly loose may detach with further handling. With a small bookseller sticker to the front pastedown of volume I and a minor inscription by a previous owner to the front blank page of volume II dated 1802. Internally firmly bound. With a minor faint scattered spotting to the occasional leaf particularly to the endpapers otherwise the pages are generally very clean throughout with only a faint tone ageing as usual. Small leather lack at head of volume II revealing the board; lacks to joint at tail; lack to lower joint at head. Volume III: lower joint split at tail. Volume IV: lower joint split at tail. Clarissa Harlowe is the second major novel published by the author after the immense success of Pamela; it is again a sentimental novel whose virtuous heroine finds herself forced by her family to marry a noble ugly and obese man against her will. She will flee with one Lovelace the very type of elegant villainous and deceitful libertine who desires to constrain her body and soul leading her into social and moral decline but this will be without counting on Clarissa's virtuous qualities. If the novel from a modern viewpoint suffers from sentimentalism and length it nonetheless remains true that the construction of the plot the dramatic twists and the psychology would durably mark European literature. Diderot would proclaim it in his Eloge de Richardson and numerous authors would claim it as influence or undergo its influence: Rousseau Jane Austen Choderlos de Laclos. Chez Paul Barde hardcover

The illustration comprises 21 fine figures the first 13 by Eisen and the last 8 by Pasquier. Each volume contains two parts with separate title pages except for the supplement volume which contains in addition to Diderot's essay the parts of the work that had been cut by Prévost. The first complete English edition dates from 1748. Contemporary full marbled brown calf bindings. Smooth spines elegantly decorated. Red morocco title labels and tan morocco volume labels only volume VII of the supplement published in 1761 in uniform binding has a black morocco volume label. Triple gilt fillet frame on boards. A tear worming to head of volume I. A stripped lower edge to volume 1. A small lack to head of volume II. Volumes one is the second edition volume two the fourth edition volume three is the first edition and volume four the second edition. Volume three catchword misprinted A for As as called for. Scarce in any early edition. Endpapers and blanks renewed to volumes one and three. As stated on the title pages of volumes one and two they had intended to be a complete story within themselves. However due to the instant success of the works going through five editions in its first year and prompting the release of many counterfeit sequels imitators and parodies Richardson chose to write two more volumes. 'Pamela' or 'Virtue Rewarded' tells of a beautiful 15 year old Pamela working as a maidservant under inappropriate master Mr B. Though it was a bestseller when published it's received criticism over time for it's seeming glorification of abuse. It's been referenced widely in literature including in 'Jane Eyre' and 'The Haunting of Hill House'. First published in 1740 this is considered to be one of the first true English novels. It was immensely popular and widely read however Richardson did receive criticism for its contents for its perceived licentiousness and disregard for class barriers. 'Pamela' is notable for its early commentary on domestic violence and the social issues of the Georgian era told through the eyes of the naive Pamela in her letters to her parents. Rebacked with contemporary calf boards preserved. Externally smart with marks to the boards and bumping to the extremities. Endpapers and blanks renewed to volumes one and three. Contemporary ink inscriptions to paste downs and preliminaries of all volumes. Internally firmly bound. Loss to extremity of leaf B slightly affecting the text.
