Study of the geology of Whynn's Dykes in Ireland with 2 beautiful engraved plates of the geological area discussed. William Richardson was born at the Manse in Aberfoyle Stirling Scotland on 1 October 1743 the first son of the Rev. James Richardson. He received his MA from the University of Glasgow Scotland in 1763 and attended a few sessions in Divinity before abandoning the idea of entering the Church. For four years he was tutor to the sons of Lord Cathcart and then secretary to His Lordship while Ambassador at St Petersburg. He became Professor of Humanity at the University of Glasgow in 1773 a post he held until 1814. His published writings include the following: Poems; Analyses of Shakespeare's characters; a tragedy; a lyrical drama; Anecdotes of the Russian Empire; contributions to The Lounger The Mirror and The Edinburgh Magazine and Review; and an essay on Celtic Superstition. Self wraps; paper lightly browned small stain on top page. Very good. This article contains the text of a lecture given to the Society of Arts London December 18 1884. It provides a short history of the subject "the lethal process" a table of anesthetic gases and vapors showing their chemical properties and 5 figures illustrating lethal chamber used in the euthanasia of animals. Richardson "spent many years in attempts to relieve pain among men by discovering and adapting substances capable of producing general or local anaesthesis and among animals by more humane methods of slaughter. He brought into use no less that fourteen anaesthetics of which methylene bichloride is the best known and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also produced local insensibility be freezing the part with an ether spray and he gave animals euthanasia by means of a lethal chamber." DNB Vol. XXII Supplement p. 1170. Sir Benjamin Richardson contributed widely to the history of medicine whose important work Disciples of Aesculapius was published in 1900. Contents are fine or better mostly unread with all tissue guards in place. Vols 1-3 were printed in 1896 4-6 in `897 and 7-9 in 1898. There is a chip to the tissue guard between the frontis and title page of volume I also the rear bottom board has a small bump. Volume IV has an abrasion spot to the top front board and to the top corner of the text block. Volume IX with a few specks to the spine. Laid in is a postage paid postcard to the GPO acknowledging receipt of volume 4. GPO hardcover

Later library buckram gilt spine-title 8vo 32 cm. 3-9 lxxxvi 1714 2 pp. This vast Persian Arabic and English Dictionary was originally published as a two-volume work by John Richardson in 1777-1780 intended principally for employees of the Hon. East India Company. John Wilkins substantially enlarged the work in 1806 and 1810 and Johnson's "new edition" of 1829 included the "addition of more than 38000 words Arabic and Persian" from the Preface as well as incorporating Willmet's Arabic Lexicon. Ownership inscription "Fred R. Pollock Lahore 1848"l on front free endpaper; lacking the half-title a mildly ex-library copy with a library bookplate and library marks on the front free endpaper and a gilt shelfnumber on the spine; title-page and a few others with old neat repairs to short tears some age-toning and occasional mild foxing about 20 pages with some heavier foxing or staining otherwise contents generally clean with occasional minor marks and one or two small edge-chips a Good copy in a sturdy binding.
