A rare pamphlet from the early years of Alcoholics Anonymous written by a midwest newspaper reporter and providing a detailed and positive overview of the program.The pamphlet prints in full a series of six articles written by Elgar Brown for the Chicago Herald-American which follow J. Buffington Nutmeg a fictional alcoholic who has hit bottom and can't stop drinking even though he wants to in his encounter with A.A. The pamphlet provides capsule summaries of the twelve steps describes encounters with recovered alcoholics discusses relapses touts the successes of the program explains the program's origins etc. Brown a staff writer for the Chicago Herald-American wrote at least two other pieces for the paper touting the success of A.A. in 1945 and 1948 the former being a series of cartoons also illustrating Nutmeg's encounter with the program. <br/>Reporting from the mainstream press on the successes of Alcoholics Anonymous was a key factor in the rapid growth of the program in its early years. This example is rare: we trace only a single copy in the papers of A.A. co-founder Robert "Dr. Bob" Smith at Brown. Herald-American unknown books

The organization being the first national church youth one was founded in 1881 in Portland Maine by the well-known clergyman Francis Edward Clark 1851 â 1927. Considered the forerunner of the modern denominational "youth fellowship" it began with as just a small group of youth but by 1906 it had over four million members. A beautiful advertising brochure for the LA landmark with a rich history. Exposition Park was originally created in 1872 as a 160-acre agricultural park. It received its current name in 1913. The 4 original tenants anchoring the park and advertised here were the National Armory the National History Museum the California Museum of Science and Industry and the Sunken Garden later renamed the Rose Garden. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park is home to the Los Angeles Raiders the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers and the University of Southern Californiaâs Trojans and The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena was the cite of John F. Kennedyâs acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. A fascinating glimpse into the off-duty life of US soldiers in Japan in the aftermath of the Second World War the collection features various pamphlets and leaflets in English and apparently hastily assembled and produced advertising strip clubs and bars serving the American forces with most of them riddled with grammar and vocabulary errors for example: "Club Butterfly. Most Best Night Spot in the Tony Tokyo Enjoy Your Self! Charming Girl's Waiting for You! The Burlesque Show Several Times Nitely." Also prominently displayed are several cartoons with provocative and risqué captions a 100-Yen banknote signed by the members of the platoon photographs including one of a severe-looking Japanese lady subtitled: "Yo - Yo The Queen of Itazuma." Four original sepia-tone photographs n. d. 1920s; 3 1/2 x 5 3/4; one with a small crease to lower left corner; all four with remnants of glue and paper to verso removed from an album ; very good condition. A great group of candid photographs they also doubled as advertisements for Delco-Light Products. Each one depicted a group of Delco employees/salespeople in a bucolic setting in a field ringed with trees. In the first one they stood in a row holding a very-large Delco banner; in the second the ladies in the group were sitting in front of the banner; in the third the people had made a "train" - leaning forward holding onto each other grinning widely; in the last one several of them had tumbled to the ground rolling around still clutching the banner. The Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co. DELCO was founded in Ohio by the inventor of the first electric starter Charles Kettering in 1909. At first supplying electrical components to the automotive industry by 1916 the company began manufacturing a line of Delco-Light electric-generating plants and motors for powering small appliances. From the start its focus was rural America where the salespeople would travel at night and demonstrate the plants on the prospective buyers' farms. Manufacturing over a 100 models and reaching its heyday by the mid-1930s the company's sales began to decline after the Second World War mostly due to President Roosevelt's rural electrification efforts and it folded in 1947. s. n. unknown books
