The 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy was ordered in 1758 and launched in 1765. It would become best known for being Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Throughout the 19th century it also served as a troopship and a prison ship. Moved to dry dock in 1922 the ship went through several major restoration periods eventually became a museum part of the National Historic Fleet and since October 2012 HMS Victory has been the flagship of the First Sea Lord. A risque novelty item it proudly proclaimed: "To be kept secret! For gentlemen only." As the card was initially pulled down Miss Fatima's bare legs were slowly revealed and by the time it was fully extended a silly clown-face underwear showed and your fingers got snapped by the clasp. Although the clasp has lost its "snap" the card has remained an interesting and unusual artifact of early-20th-century male entertainment. Germany: Muco paperback

A beautiful Art Nouveau advertising broadside for the inks of The Ault & Wiborg Co. The company a manufacturer of dry color dyes pigments and printing inks was founded in 1878 in Cincinnati Ohio by Levi Addison Ault and Frank Bestow Wiborg. In the 1870s Ault a French-Canadian moved from Ontario Canada to Cincinnati Ohio to join his brother and to work for a company dealing in lampblack and rosins. Wiborg a Norwegian-American was also hired by the business as a salesman. The two of them put up $10 000/each as initial capital and launched The Ault & Wiborg Co. in July of 1878 announcing that they aim to become the biggest producer of inks in the US and eventually in the world and coming up with their business motto: "Hic et Ubique" Here and Everywhere. There are also various dotted lines to be cut on and around the shoe just so the tabs of the figures can be inserted in to be played with and to create a scene of the beloved fairy tale. The articles included are;'Substance of a Letter to Lord Viscount Melville Written in May 1815 with the Outlines of a Plan to Raise British Seamen and to Form Their Minds to Volunteer the Naval Service when Required; To do Away with the Evils of Impressment and Man Our Ships Effectually with Mercantile Seamen' and'Somatopsychonoologia: Showing that the Proofs of Body Life and Mind Considered as Distinct Essences Cannot be Deduced from Physiology but Depend on a Distinct Sort of Evidence Being an Examination of the Controversy Concerning Life Carried on by MM. Laurence Abernethy Rennell & Others'. Both of these articles bound together and taken from 'The Pamphleteer Vol. XXIV No. XLVIII. This is the second edition of this work. and a separate volume featuring 'The Right and Practice of Impressment as Concerning Great Britain and America Considered' taken from Vol. XIV No. XXVIII of 'The Pamphleteer'.This set features three very scarce articles from 'The Pamphleteer'. One of the articles was written by Thomas Forster under the pen name of 'Philostratus' and discusses the ideas of Abernethy Laurence and Rennell concerning the separation of the mind and body and how the scientific concept of somatopsychology the concept of the link between mind and body linking psychology and medicine disproves their ideas. The other two articles discuss impressment including the rights of Britain to conscript American born citizens and the negative effects of forced conscription. The odd 'Library of Political Science' stamp to all. Disbound from the original wrappers all pages present. Pages generally firmly bound to 'Substance of a Letter' and 'Somatopsychonoologia' mostly disbound to the other. Dampstained title page and further stains to margins at rear. <br/><br/>In March 1749 a British parliamentary committee was created to enquire into the state and condition of the land adjoining Hudson's Bay and the trade carried on there. One of the key witnesses was James Isham who arrived back from North America to give evidence. Isham whose name appears frequently in this volume felt settlement by the shores of Hudson's Bay was impossible since food crops could not be grown there inland posts were needed even at uneconomic costs in transportation and no practical northwest passage really existed. 18770383571877. Original manuscript. Very Good. 4pp octavo written in sepia ink on a single folded leaf; top few lines of first page are cross-hatched as the writer finishes up her message. In the original mailing envelope torn open addressed to Hannah Pancoast Mount Holly Burlington Co. New Jersey with a three-cent stamp postmarked at Philadelphia. Addressed to “My dearest H.†the writer says she received her letter when she was about to leave Paris but is writing her a less “hurried†reply now that she’s aboard ship although “it seems impossible to give thee an idea of the joy of the whole summer.†The rest of the letter is rhapsodic in its report of the beauties of Italy and Switzerland. The writer who notes that only 8 of “our party…went through Italy entirely†mentions seeing Naples Pompeii taking “lovely rides on the Bay of Naples†and “days at Rome sightseeing.†She then spent “day after day at Venice…riding in those gondolas a lazy dreaming life…†and including a trip from there to “the island where Byron spent so much of his time†San Lazarro degli Armeni. “The glory of the beauty of some of the past scenes can never fade from memory†and she singles out the ride from Pisa to Genoa with its tunnels and sights of “fishermen and …children…and little parties in bathing….†as especially charming. She was equally taken with the beauties of “Switzerland with its lakes†where she accomplished “the ascent of the Rigi†mountain near Lake Lucerne and also crossed the unforgettable mountain passes. She concludes “But I must tell thee all about this†in person and goes on to describe shipboard life. “There are ten Rev. gentlemen on board and they have family worship twice a day.†There is also “a great deal of musical talent on board…quite a concert…and last night a comical school. Miss Florence would have nejoyed the fun…fancy readings and recitations then one is asked to promenade and play games.†she also plays two-hour chess games with a “prof. from Georgia†and then with “another gentlemanâ€. She opines “this is a lazy life†and says she’ll be happy to see her “dear ones†next week lists them all and ends with “Han I long to see thee and tell thee of the romances of this whole summer outing…†Unsigned. We find online that Hannah H. Pancoast was born 28 May 1862 the daughter of Joseph Pancoast and Susan Thompson of Salem County New Jersey. the “Steamship Bolivia†was an Anchor Line ship built by Glasgow’s Robert Duncan Co. and launched in 1873. unknown
1885000015bBrattleboro Vermont VT. Good. 1885. Softcover. A wonderful hand written diary written in 1895 by a very social woman in Brattleboro Vermont. It would appear that the writer unfortunately unnamed in the diary was either the wife of a Church Minister or the Church's Goodwill Ambassador as she spent nearly every day visiting and calling on Church members sometimes 8 or 10 in a single day. She names dozens and dozens of Brattleboro residents that she visited in her Diary often she brought baked goods or hand made articles of clothing to people. She also wrote much about the local Y.M.C.A. the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and other Brattleboro organizations that she worked very hard for. She wrote nearly every day most days filling the entire page missing only two days during the year when she was away from home. The diary has one page for each day of the year. Here are some quotes from the actual diary: "Jan. 14 1885 Cold but Fine. Did some ironing in the morning then went to see Mrs. Crowell found her better - borrowed some books. Went to see Mrs. O'Neil and tried to comfort her a little then to see Tina. On reaching home found Mira who staid to dinner. Called on Mrs. Tolles who was not at home. Stopped at Mrs. Smith's to leave Mrs. Mitchell's letter. Spent the evening reading & writing. Wrote to Mrs. Cutting." "Jan. 19 1885 Lovely & Cold washed in the early morning. Went down to Laura's with pie. Called on Mrs. Oaks and tried to call on Mrs. Tower in p.m. George Barrett carried me to see the colored people on the fair ground. Mrs. Streeter not at home. Saw Mrs. C.D. Fuller and Mrs. Amos Parker Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. Colman." "Feb 10 1885 Very Cold. Did a little washing a.m. Called on Mrs. Clarkson and Mrs. Reed. A unique ephemera piece it was most probably displayed in the lobby of the Hotel St. James in San Jose CA the latter now a historic landmark. The hotel occupied the Moir Building named after its developer - William Moir a young businessman and the director of the Board of Trade. The structure was a significant example of 19th-century luxurious commercial architecture presenting an eclectic combination of Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styles. The silk featured advertisements for local businesses rules and regulations for guests of the Hotel St. James civil and penal codes for liability of hotel keepers etc. s. n. unknown
