1926FGN24-H-1Paris: Garnier Freres c1926 . Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 6". None. Two excellent uniformly bound works by notable French authors in three volumes both limited editions. Two uniformly bound works by notable French authors. The first two volumes comprise of Alan-Rene Lesage's picaresque novel Gil Blas. Gil Blas follows the adventures of the son of a stablehand and chambermaid. Blas attends the University of Salamanca where his bright future is interrupted by his cooperation with some robbers. The novel follows his observations of many figures in society both lay and clerical. The novel is a witty work using class archetypes. The third volume of this set is Stendhal's non-fiction work De L'amour. It is an essay on love. Stendhal was a pen name for Marie-Henri Beyle. He is best known for his novels Le Rouge et le Noir and La Chartreuse de Parme. He is notable for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology and is considered as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism. Each volume is from a limited edition print run with L'amour being numbered 128 of 1500 Volume I of Gil Blas numbered 108 of 1000 and volume II 102 of 1000. All volumes are bound with the original wraps in with the text. In uniform half morocco bindings with gilt-stamped detailing to the spines. Externally smart with just a small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of joints. A few handling marks to boards also. The front hinge to D'Lamour is slightly strained but firm after endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Small tidemark to the first few pages of De L'Amour not affecting text. Pages are slightly age-toned with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed Garnier Freres hardcover
