Translated from the original French. Illustrated with frontispiece and eight plates with many in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Marie-Joseph Eugene Sue a French novelist who popularized the genre of the serial novel in France. In the original red cloth binding. Externally sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Discolouration to the boards. Joints starting but firm with splits in the cloth across the spine. The odd mark to the boards. Hinges tender but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd mark from the ink of the opposite illustration. Contemporary inscriptions to the front pastedown. Each volume is dated 1838 and is stated "Seconde Edition." Hardcovers bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards. All volumes rebacked with modern lighter brown leather the original leather has chipping on the boards near the spines but with the rebacks the bindings are sturdy and can withstand confident use. Each spine has a red leather title label and a small green leather Volume number label. There is moderate wear to the bindings which is abraded in places. Rubbing and scuffing to the boards. Spines are sound and hinges are secure. The outer edge of the text block is speckled. The interior pages show occasional spotting and foxing and in Volume IV there is a bit of damping at the top of the text block. Collates complete with all maps and plates including 3 folding maps 38 plates and over 20 pages of facsimiles of letters writings etc. All of the plates that are called for in the list at the end of Volume V are present although several are at different places than indicated. In Volume I there is 1 more plate than called for. Text is in French.
