This is the rare first edition in book form preceding the far more common illustrated and popular editions that soon followed.<br />Sue's <em>Le Juif Errant</em> a classic of French nineteenth-century popular fiction was written at the height of the age of Balzac Dumas and Hugo.</p><p>According to Sue's novel the Huguenot Rennepont family lost its wealth during the French Catholic persecution. What little remained was entrusted to the Jewish banker Samuel who with his heirs turned the money into a fortune over 150 years. The terms of the arrangement called for the descendants to meet at a certain address in Paris in 1832 to divide the inheritance. This book is the story of the seven remaining members of the family and the efforts of the Jesuits to eliminate them and claim the fortune for themselves. The old Jewish banker appears at the novel's end proclaiming an end to the curse of the Wandering Jew.</p><p>"Eugene Sue wrote his <em>Juif Errant</em> in 1844. From the latter work … most people derive their knowledge of the legend" <em>Jewish Encyclopedia</em>. The medieval story of the Wandering Jew describes a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to his crucifixion saying "Go on more quickly." Jesus replied "I go but thou shalt wait till I return" thereby condemning the man to roam the earth until the Second Coming. Oral tradition song and popular literature perpetuated the long-lived anti-Semitic legend and described supposed sightings of the Wandering Jew.</p><p>"Sue was like Dumas an improviser and possessed remarkable fecundity and invention. To these qualities add the instinct for portraying the weird and the terrible and it is not hard to understand why he was popular in his day and retains a good share of that popularity still" Warner.</p><p>The first edition is rarely encountered in a contemporary binding complete with all half-titles. Six numbers bound as one with a title page and an author's preface dated 1831. Each part is numbered and pagination continues between the parts though there are no prices on each part. The story takes starts with a slave ship being boarded by a pirate Brulart who seems to be white not black. Subseqent to this a couple of years later I think one of the slaves Attar Gull takes revenge on his captors but suffers and dies cursing the white man. I suspect the inclusion of Brulart in the title of this 49 page piece is to bringing in the readers as the main bulk of the story is around Gull. Scarce with no copies at auction since 1932. Recently rebound in 1/4 calf with marbled boards. The binding is new so the description relates only to the text block. The leaves are mostly in excellent shape with the inevitable ageing and tanning a few leaves have a stain that doesn't affect the text's readability. Collated complete. Le Juif Errant or The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel which was hugely popular in Paris and elsewhere. It was written by Eugène Sue 1804-1857 who made popularised the genre of the serial novel in France. This 1845 is complete in four volumes with illustrations by Paul Gavarni 1804-1866 a French caricaturist. This was one of the most ambitious of his book illustration projects. In half calf and silk bindings. Externally fairly smart with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities. Fading to the rear board of vol I and a little to the front board of vol IV. Pages 11 to 15 of vol IV are coming loose but otherwise pages are firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout. Some foxing as usual. Le juif errant is one of the greatest bestsellers of the 19th century published just after Les mystères de Paris. To the narrative qualities of Les mystères de Paris Le juif errant adds the intervention of the supernatural and the fantastic represented by the legendary vagabond who gives his name to the book. Preceded by cholera which inspired Eugène Sue to write anthology pages the legendary Jew returns from beyond the seas and beyond the centuries to prevent the Society of Jesus from seizing a fabulous fortune by eliminating its heirs one by one. Le juif errant being an adventure novel taking place in the four corners of the world. It triggered an anti-Jesuit movement in France. If Eugène Sue is more or less forgotten today he was not only one of the most famous novelists of the 19th century but the most read in Europe and even Dostoevsky was a regular reader of his work. Few writers of this era benefited from the editorial qualities demonstrated by Les mystères de Paris and Le juif errant abundantly and superbly illustrated. This moving letter signed "Sue" was a response to a friend who was exiled in Spain. Sue wrote this letter also while in exile and described the suffering he experienced being away from home. He thanked his friend for a letter and asked him where and how Sue could send him a book edited in Geneva. Small tears along the folds; paperclip impression in the top margin; Sue's name and dates written in a different hand on the bottom margin; partially-erased pencil notations on the back. 18443455<p>The first English edition of an international best-seller a fiercely anti-Catholic gothic novel that was first published in serial form in Paris as <em>Le Juif errant</em> 1844. Eugène Sue - who incidentally is remembered as coining the phrase 'revenge is a dish best served cold' in his novel <em>Matilde</em> 1841 - is mostly remembered for his socialist-inspired anti-Catholic novels the present novel and <em>The Mysteries of Paris</em> both of which were enormously popular examples of the serial novel in France. In <em>The Wandering Jew</em> Sue tells of the conflict between the eponymous hero and the villain a Jesuit called Rodin set against a backdrop of poverty crime and the harsh life of working class Paris contrasted with the corruption of the nobility. Both books were highly controversial because of their vivid gothic portrayals of violence and corruption and their overtly socialist and anti-clerical message.</p><p>First published in serial form in England this English translation appeared bi-weekly in illustrated parts at one shilling concurrently with the original French text. When the first volume was completed for separate publication Chapman & Hall began the publication of a series of twenty-six sixpenny parts containing the illustrations alone which were published as <em>Heath's Illustrations to the Wandering Jew</em> 1845-1846.
