18458106London: Printed For The Booksellers 1845. 8vo pp. 694 2 frontispiece engraved title-page and 13 plates. Original blue cloth boards blocked in blind spine blocked in gilt. Flyleaf excised hinges split exposing webbing rear joint splitting at head some wear to extremities. Ownership inscription of Arthur Morris to pastedown. An seemingly-unrecorded piracy of Sue’s mammoth anti-Catholic novel serialised in France beginning in 1844 and first published in English by Chapman and Hall in three volumes between 1844 and 1845. Several abridgements followed but this single-volume edition runs to just shy of 700 pages in tiny print apparently the complete text. We can find no trace of this printing in any institutional catalogues which has 1845 on its letterpress and 1846 on its engraved title-page; there is no printer listed but its gatherings are signed numerically which suggests a continental origin.
