Eugène Sue's classic novel The Wandering Jew written in the original French in a four volume set with illustrations by Gavarni. A four volume set in half calf and silk bindings. With the important Gavarni illustrations. Delightfully illustrated with 23 plates to Volume I; 20 plates to Volume II; 22 plates and a folding map to Volume III; and 17 plates to Volume IV with numerous in-text illustrations vignettes and head and tail pieces throughout the volumes. Collated complete. Le Juif Errant or The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel which was hugely popular in Paris and elsewhere. It was written by Eugène Sue 1804-1857 who made popularised the genre of the serial novel in France. This 1845 is complete in four volumes with illustrations by Paul Gavarni 1804-1866 a French caricaturist. This was one of the most ambitious of his book illustration projects. In half calf and silk bindings. Externally fairly smart with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities. Fading to the rear board of vol I and a little to the front board of vol IV. Pages 11 to 15 of vol IV are coming loose but otherwise pages are firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout. Half-brown shagreen bindings spines slightly faded with four raised bands set with gilt dots and decorated with double gilt compartments marbled paper boards marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Some foxing as usual. Le juif errant is one of the greatest bestsellers of the 19th century published just after Les mystères de Paris. To the narrative qualities of Les mystères de Paris Le juif errant adds the intervention of the supernatural and the fantastic represented by the legendary vagabond who gives his name to the book. Preceded by cholera which inspired Eugène Sue to write anthology pages the legendary Jew returns from beyond the seas and beyond the centuries to prevent the Society of Jesus from seizing a fabulous fortune by eliminating its heirs one by one. Le juif errant being an adventure novel taking place in the four corners of the world. It triggered an anti-Jesuit movement in France. If Eugène Sue is more or less forgotten today he was not only one of the most famous novelists of the 19th century but the most read in Europe and even Dostoevsky was a regular reader of his work. Few writers of this era benefited from the editorial qualities demonstrated by Les mystères de Paris and Le juif errant abundantly and superbly illustrated. He was Dumas's main competitor and the latter thought he would even outlive him. Paulin hardcover

Eugène Sue 1804-1857 was a French novelist and one of several authors who popularised the genre of the serial novel with his The Mysteries of Paris. This novel concerns Parisian high society and infidelity and also contains the first known expression of the popular proverb "La vengeance se mange très-bien froide" later expressed in English as "Revenge is a dish best served cold".Translated into English by C. Rochford this work is illustrated with an engraved title page and twenty-one plates by G. Standfast. In a half calf binding. Externally sound with shelf wear and rubbing to the boards and spine and a little bumping to the extremities. Hinges are strained but held firmly by cords. Internally firmly bound.
