Most renowned for 'The Jungle Book' 'Kim' and 'Just so Stories' Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is seen as a pioneer for the short story form and a classic author of children's fiction. He was born in India the inspiration behind a vast amount of his writings which include 'The Jungle Book' 'Just So Stories' and 'Kim'.'Under the Deodars' is a short story collection featuring six stories. This edition was first published for the Indian Railway Library in Allahabad and London. The Indian Railway Library was a series of pamphlets intended to offer cheap 'throwaway' reading material for travellers and began as an idea of Kipling's to fund his return to England. 'Under the Deodars' was his fourth release of six for the Library.In the publisher's original paper wraps with green-grey wraps illustrated by Kipling's father John Lockwood Kipling. In paper wraps. Front wrap of 'The Phantom Rickshaw' is detached but present with loss to the spine with some marking to the wraps including a couple of small chips to the front wrap. Front wrap of 'The Story of the Gadsbys' is almost detached loss to most of the spine marking and rubbing to the wraps with a small chip to the front wrap. Light edge wear to the extremities of the wraps of each volume. Internally 'In Black and White' 'The Phantom Rickshaw' and 'The Story of the Gadsbys' are firmly bound and 'Soldiers Three' and 'Wee Willie Winkie' is generally firmly bond. Written by celebrated English novelist poet and short-story writer Rudyard Kipling known for his popular work 'The Jungle Book'. This collection of poetry was published in Chile with many of the poems written during Kipling's time working for the British War effort in the Boer War. Comprised of seven poems and two articles with two of the poems and both articles appearing here in book-form for the first time. This collection also includes letters from author Julian Ralph reporter Charles E. Hands and Douglas Story. This collection is suggested to be the only known case of a book being published in a country that was never visited by the author. The publisher Hume & Co. was said to be an huge admirer of Kipling's although overestimated the public demand meaning his print-run of 400 copies were largely left unsold or burnt. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally very smart with light offsetting and a little sunning. Small mark to the head of the rear wrap with slight markings from the staples externally and to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean with slight age toning.
