These two volumes discuss the experiences of the Irish guards from 1914 to 1918. The point of view is the battalions with the assistance of Regimental diaries private letters and documents. In his beautiful way Kipling transports the reader back to that sunny summer of 1914 when the rampant optimism gave way to the horror of the trenches. Kipling lost his son at Loos his remains not identified until 1992. It is his ability to write with power that makes this an eminently readable copy even now in the 21st century. Volume II also contains on pages 217-284 an index appendix A; Officers who were killed; B. NCO's who were killed and C. the award from the Victoria Cross to the many distinguished service medals. A fine set beautifully bound in a modern 3/4 black leather over black cloth raised bands compartments lettered and decorated in gilt top edges gilt endpapers renewed housed within black cloth slipcase. Laid-in is a period photo of a man in full Irish Guard uniform whom we believe to be John Kipling only son of the author. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake.
