Original autograph letter signed by the author Rudyard Kipling on printed stationery from Rock House Maidencombe St. Marychurch where he and his wife lived between 1896 and 1898. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. Bombay must have been a ghastly place this winter. My sister’s letters gave me some of the news as she learned it and it seems to have been fearful. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. In very good condition. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar an artist and painter who goes blind and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate Maisie. Though it was poorly received by critics the novel has remained in print for over a century. It was also adapted into a play two silent films as well as a drama film. Macmillan and Co hardcover books

First published in 1888 when Kipling was 23 and working in India for The Civil and Military Gazette Lahore these two volumes contain stories written for periodicals. They were published in the "India Railway Library" series No. 2 and No. 6. respectively by A.H. Wheeler at Allahabad and went into several editions. Kipling left India for London the following year. At the bottom of the first title is stamped "A.J. Combridge & Co. Bombay".<br/><br/>THE STORY OF THE GADSBYS conforms to the first issue of the front wrappers in two of the three relevant issue points the mountains appear to be retouched as per the second issue; however the heart shape in lower left corner not touching the border and absence of the "Mayo Art School Lahore" slug beneath the imprint are both points which conform to the first issue indicating a possible unrecorded intermediate issue see Richards p. 90.<br/><br/>WEE WILLIE WINKIE conforms to Stewart's description of the third Indian Edition made up of three thousand sheets printed for the first English edition.
