Over the course of twelve months they introduced readers to three amazing novels: Arthur Conan Doyle's THE SIGN OF FOUR complete in the February 1890 issue Oscar Wilde's THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY complete in the July 1890 issue and then this one. In February 1890 Kipling's agent A.P.Watt had negotiated for Kipling to deliver to Lippincott this novel -- for which they issued a UK copyright edition in November 1890 the true first edition. New York publishers John Lovell / United States Book Co. with London agent Wolcott Balestier and Kipling in-law were all set to publish this in early December 1890 when. The book's publication was held up until the American magazine version. could appear on the newstands in late December in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine cover-dated January 1891" Richards. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. This volume published in Chile includes three poems and two stories that Kipling wrote during the Boer War plus four poems written earlier; it is the first edition in book form anywhere of the poems "Pharaoh and the Sergeant" and "Kitchener's School" and of the Boer War tales "With Number Three" and "Surgical and Medical." "It has been said that this is the only case on record of a first edition of a book being published in a country never visited by the author and where people did not speak his language" Richards. Hume the proprietor of Santiago's main bookstore was a huge Kipling fan but it appears that he overestimated the Chilean Kipling market: he supposedly printed 400 copies but few sold and the remainder were either burned in 1906 or pulped at a paper mill in 1911 -- though some copies like this one apparently were neither read nor burned nor pulped. Original grey-green pictorial wrappers<br/> <br/> First Published Edition technically the second Indian edition following the suppressed 1890 edition which had considerably different contents and of which only six copies are known. This 1891-dated Allahabad edition printed there came next followed by the 1891 edition with joint Allahabad / London imprint the first English edition printed in the UK. This was issued as No. XIV in the "Indian Railway Library" -- though Wheeler published this THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE without authority after Kipling had left India for England. As is typical for this volume that is extremely fragile more delicate than the authorized titles condition is good-to-very good -- with about half of the wrapper's spine perished and with chips at some corners. Livingston says of this edition "although it is very scarce copies can be found." Richards A52 mistakenly showing this edition as undated; Stewart 93; Martindell 42; Livingston 70. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. This is Kipling's great novel about the cod fishing fleet of Gloucester Massachusetts written while the newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont. Kipling freely acknowledged that the book owed much to Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro who brought the Kiplings' elder daughter into the world -- for Conland had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester. The American edition in fact is dedicated to Conland; this English edition bears no dedication. This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book -- its moral in a single sentence -- is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ".If you don't work you will die!" It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail Mason. CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS was the fourth and last volume to be bound in Macmillan's attractive gift binding style used for the JUNGLE BOOKs in 1894-1895 and for SOLDIER TALES in 1896. In 1937 forty years after publication this tale was made into a film starring Freddie Bartholomew Spencer Tracy who won an Oscar Lionel Barrymore and Mickey Rooney. This is an unusually bright copy fine except for the slightest of rubbing at the spine tips and small bumps at the fore-tips. The original black-coated endpapers are not cracked.
