An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works.<br/><br/>Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human man-cub raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. In very good condition. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar an artist and painter who goes blind and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate Maisie. Stapled as issued in self wrappers; green cloth chemise and slipcase. First edition of Kipling's only story of the slums. Based on the author's observations of the lower classes it is set in the East End telling the story of a young honest woman who has become a relief worker in the slums after she has been deserted by her abusive husband. She voluntarily administers a charity fund donated by the Church and keeps a detailed record of the money spent for the poor. When her husband Tom Herodsfoot returns to her and wants to appropriate the charity money she refuses to hand it over and in revenge he beats her to death. This was the second of the four Kipling gift books bound similarly by Macmillan with SOLDIER TALES and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS coming out the following two years respectively. This is an attractive near-fine copy volume slightly askew spine gilt less than bright but no foxing and essentially no wear; the front flyleaf bears an inked "Xmas 1895" signature. Kipling was close to his American publisher and his family - it was Frank Doubleday's son Nelson who asked Kipling to write a book of animal stories published as Just So Stories in 1902. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake.
