Quarter red cloth with marbled boards rubbing to board edges light wear to corners. Light foxing to endpapers previous owner's name to front pastedown endpaper. Some light patches of foxing to text outside margin of two pages in Soldiers Three have slight damage from a label appears to be an original binding flaw. Original wraps priced at 1 Rupee are bound in with all issues and have varying degrees of damage - most have small sections of loss to edges and/or corners rear cover of Soldiers Three has a large section of loss rear cover of Wee Willie Winkie has a hole to the centre. All issues are the fourth Indian edition published in 1890 this includes Soldiers Three despite it stating Second Indian Edition to the title page. This edition used the same sheets as the first English Edition pagination is the same as the English edition but some of the ads are omitted. Each of these titles had a total Indian issue of 3000 copies. Roberts notes that the fourth Indian edition did not sell well and some copies are known to be stamped to the cover margin in purple ink: 'To still further popularize this Celebrated Series the price is reduced to Eight Annas per volume.' This is stamp is present to front wrappers of all issues in this collection. A rare group of Indian editions including the sought after 'Phantom Rickshaw' a collection of supernatural tales. This publication also prints a poem by Rudyard Kipling The Mother Lodge on page 94-95 noting that Kipling was a Freemason. Most of the book pages 88 to 404 is devoted to 'Report of the Committee on Foreign Correspondence' including detailed information about 'English-speaking Grand Lodges' in the United States listed by each state and including 'Indian Territory' Canada by province Great Britain New Zealand Australia etc. and a section devoted to thirteen 'None English-speaking Grand Bodies' including Cuba Mexico and Puerto Rico. This publication for the year 1900 as well as previous 'Proceedings' include discussions of African-American masons see page 119 179 206 etc which includes discussion of "Negro Lodges and Grand Lodges" and the difficulties with acceptance in Washington page 119 and "Clandestine Negro Masonry" page 178 referencing Washington in the section devoted to the Indian Territory and further reference to Washington and former "Prince Hall Lodge" members in the Louisiana section page 206. Previous Grand Lodge publications also discussed rejection of 'colored' Grand Lodges by some white Grand Lodges with particular reference to the failure of 'Ohio recognition' in a specific instance in 1877 which stated: "As predicted in our last annual address the proposed recognition of our grand lodge by the grand lodge of whites of this state has failed. While I anticipated the result I must confess that the manner in which it was brought about surprised and disappointed me. followed by a long discussion of the events." The British edition was preceded by the American edition by one month. The work was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine between 1896 and 1897.
