1926063051Paris: Shakespeare and Company 1926. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Eighth edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This is a very good copy an early rebind in black cloth with the name Lawrence S. Morris dated Paris 1926 to ffep Indicating that this was rebound shortly after purchase. Lawrence S. Morris 1894-1992 graduated from Yale University and served as Chief of Cultural Exchange in the U.S. Embassy in France. Due to the binding the volume is internally in very good condition some minor browning paper at edges as might be expected. The eighth printing of Ulysses being the first following having the type entirely reset work accomplished with Joyce's participation one of the key Shakespeare and Company printings nice early and desirable. Ulysses was printed in English by Shakespeare and Company the independent bookstore in Paris which had been established in 1919 by the American expatriate Sylvia Beach -- and which became the gathering-place for such literary greats as Ernest Hemingway F. Scott Fitzgerald Ezra Pound Gertrude Stein and of course James Joyce. As is also noted on this volume's bibliographic history page the first printing was published by Shakespeare and Company in 1922 The Tenth Printing was published in 1928 following the type was entirely re-set to correct the legion of typographic errors in the harried first printing that had carried through all the previous printings. This copy #7.lucky seven. Laid in is original prospectus. Vellum is uniformly in great condition Top edge gilt is fine. Cardboard slipcase shows wear especially at extremities . Grey morocco clamshell box is still in near fine condition. This edition with the textual improvements from the editions of Paris in the 1920's has become quite scarce . Unauthorized printed and discreetly distributed by Samuel Roth in New York City and Philidelphia six years before before Ulysses' ban would be lifted in the U.S. Although Roth had formerly published Ulysses' serially in Two Worlds Monthly these full length copies made to pass as Shakespeare and Co.'s ninth printing would ulitmately place Roth in jail. Despite its disreputation it is nevertheless held by several special collections across the U.S. and is an essential character in the history of Ulysses and banned books in 20th century America. ULYSSES first saw print in the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. Midway through their serialization issues of the magazine were seized and the editors were brought to trial in the fall of 1920. When they were convicted ULYSSES was abandoned only about half of it published. This disaster led to the now iconic publication of the book by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare & Company of which this copy is a ninth printing. 8'' x 6.25''. Later blue cloth boards. 736 pages.
