In 1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical Society and in 1900 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Before Ross the book was owned by the Bodleian Library at Oxford; only indications are a small location sticker inside the front cover and a small "Bodleian Library" stamp on the copyright page over which is a smaller stamp indicating that the book was withdrawn from the Bodleian Library.
