Émile Zola 1840 - 1902 was a French novelist playwright journalist political Liberal and practitioner of "naturalism." His works were favored by ELEK a small British Leftist publishing house who published this book in England during 1957 and several others by Zola around this time. A Priest in the House had been previously published in 1917 as The Conquest of Plassans. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition Thus which is LIMITED to 2050 sets. Rather uncommon. The translation from the original French is by Arthur Symonsauthorized by Zola. Included is an essay by Robert H. Sherard 1861-1943 the first biographer of Oscar Wilde who wrote one for Zola in 1893. Large octavo. Smooth green cloth binding now faded to tan on the spine with a gilt reproduction of Zola's signature on the front cover; paper label on spine. Clean text; 468 pages; all pages rough-cut. There is a small label from a previous-owner on the FFEP; attached to the rear paste-down is another spine label not darkened!. The extremities are very slightly rubbed and bumped. There are a handful of very small stains on the front endsheet and there is a bookseller's tiny label on the front free endsheet. Bookseller's label on the title page. The dust jacket is in good condition. Age-toned and lightly soiled and rubbed. There are a couple of small losses from the paper at the ends of the spine. The larger loss is from the paper at the head of the spine and measures 1 inch wide by 1/2 of an inch deep. There are also 5 large chips in the edges. The spine of the jacket is darkened. Otherwise this is a rare jacketed version of the unexpurgated 1951 translation with a useful introduction by Alan Hodge. There are no marks or inscriptions.
