Held in the original publisher's unclipped dustwrapper. 'l'Assommoir' is one of Zola's novels in his Rougon-Macquart series. This novel is a study of alcoholism and poverty in the working class life in Paris. Emile Zola was an influential writer writer who is known for leading the literary school of naturalism. His novels show the prosperity and poverty in France during the nineteenth century. Translated from French by Arthur Symons. Symons was a poet editor and critic. His other works include 'A Book of Parodies' 'Tristan and Iseult: A Play in Four Acts' 'Love's Cruelty' 'Figures of Several Centuries' 'The Cafe Royal and Other Essays' and more. With a frontispiece after 'The Drinking Place' by Toulouse Lautrec. Additional spine label bound in to the rear. In the original publisher's quarter paper vellum binding with cloth to the boards held in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally smart. A little discolouration to the spine. There is some foxing to page and block edges; it opens a little loosely. The jacket has some loss to spine bottom and lower edge. Rear a little grubby. This was made into a film by Roger Vadim in 1966 with Jane Fonda. This is a Very Good Plus copy of an edition which was LIMITED to 2050 sets. A very nice edition with a long introduction by Henry James. Black cloth binding with a reproduction of Zola's signature on the front; titling on a paper label on the spine. Clean text; xli 323 pages; all rough-cut. The translation is by Alexander Texeira de Matos; it was the first unexpurgated translation which came out in 1895. Attractive deco bookplate on the front paste-down. Rear paste-down has a publisher's titling label. Light push to the corners and rub to one side of the paper spine label.
