This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition Thus which is LIMITED to 2050 sets. Rather uncommon. The translation from the original French is by Arthur Symonsauthorized by Zola. Included is an essay by Robert H. Sherard 1861-1943 the first biographer of Oscar Wilde who wrote one for Zola in 1893. Large octavo. Smooth green cloth binding now faded to tan on the spine with a gilt reproduction of Zola's signature on the front cover; paper label on spine. Clean text; 468 pages; all pages rough-cut. There is a small label from a previous-owner on the FFEP; attached to the rear paste-down is another spine label not darkened!. This was made into a film by Roger Vadim in 1966 with Jane Fonda. This is a Very Good Plus copy of an edition which was LIMITED to 2050 sets. A very nice edition with a long introduction by Henry James. Black cloth binding with a reproduction of Zola's signature on the front; titling on a paper label on the spine. Clean text; xli 323 pages; all rough-cut. The translation is by Alexander Texeira de Matos; it was the first unexpurgated translation which came out in 1895. Attractive deco bookplate on the front paste-down. Rear paste-down has a publisher's titling label. Light push to the corners and rub to one side of the paper spine label.
