Wilde’s play premiered in January 1895 to an audience that included the Prince of Wales and was an immediate success. Together with The Importance of Being Earnest An Ideal Husband is often considered Wilde's dramatic masterpiece. After Earnest it is his most popularly produced play. The authors of this anonymous parody an entertaining imitation of the classical Greek comedy of Aristophanes were three Oxford undergraduates. Leopold Amery 1873-1955 later a prominent journalist and conservative politician. Francis Wrigley Hirst 1873-1953 later a successful journalist editor of The Economist and biographer of Thomas Jefferson. Little is known about Henry Alford Antony Cruso besides that he published another drama in 1907. The initialism Y.T.O. comprises the last letter of their surnames. The student-authors were motivated by "an honest dislike for Dorian Gray Salome The Yellow Book and the whole of the erotic lack-a-daisical opium-cigarette literature of the day". The play was published in 1894 just before Wilde's arrest and trial when he was at the height of his fame. Octavo. Original buff wrappers rebacked front cover lettered in green. Inscribed to a literary batailleur First edition in French number 1 of 12 copies on Holland paper inscribed by the author on the justification de tirage page: "a mon ami Robert Scheffer Oscar Wilde". Signed or inscribed copies of this edition are rare: we trace only two others in auction records. A French poet and short story writer Scheffer 1864-1926 is best remembered for his "contes rapides" or "quick tales" and for his combative style both as a literary critic and as a duellist. He took Wilde to the Folies Bergère on 10 May 1898 and presented him with a copy of his poetry collection La Chanson de Néos affectionately inscribed to the "grand poète". In 1909 Scheffer edited the short-lived gay magazine Akademos. Wilde wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol while exiled in France and originally published the work in Britain earlier the same year under the pseudonym "C.3.3." the number of his cell. He took a particular interest in this edition discussing the format type binding and other details with his translator Henry-David Davray 1873-1944. Wilde was intimately involved in the translation and Davray remembered how "Every word was weighed every term was discussed every sentence was read reread scanned with all possible intonations". Provenance: Samuel Pozzi 1846-1918 the French surgeon and pioneer gynecologist and subject of a portrait by John Singer Sargent with his bookplate. Octavo 183 x 121 mm. Text printed in French and English. Contemporary three-quarter green waxed paper spine lettered and ruled in gilt marbled sides and endpapers top edge red others untrimmed original wrappers bound in red and yellow silk bookmarker. Superficial split and small abrasion to front joint contents toned but clean. A very good copy. Not in Mason. unknown

An impassioned defence First separate edition first published as a letter in the Daily Chronicle on 28 May 1897 just over a week after Wilde was released from prison. This is Wilde's defence of the warder of Reading Gaol who was dismissed from his job after giving biscuits to a hungry child. This copy belonged to A. J. A. Symons 1900-1941 with his bookplate in the chemise. Symons was friends with Lord Alfred Douglas and was writing a biography of Wilde at the time of his death. He was the founder of both the First Edition Club and the Book Collector's Quarterly. Octavo pp. 16. Original brown wrappers front cover lettered in black. Housed in custom gold patterned chemise. This book contains chapters on "The May-Day Festival in Ireland" and "Fairy Archaeology and Medico-Religious Ceremonies". Some chapters appeared in the Dublin University Magazine ahead of this collection. The elder Wilde was a respected surgeon who was appointed to treat Queen Victoria. He ran the St Mark's Ophthalmic Hospital for Diseases of the Eye and Ear and published works on medicine archaeology and folklore. Small octavo. Frontispiece. With 2 pp. of publisher's ads. W. Rolleston" and with quite a number of manuscript corrections throughout. <br />This magazine was first issued three issues per year as wrappered magazines. At the completion of the volume 12 issues the remaining stock was issued as a bound volumes in cloth with a general title page. However in the publisher's cloth issue the title pages and contributors lists for the individual issues were discarded as the pagination is continuous without them. Here these have most unusually been retained.<br />This volume contains in the Trinity and Michaelmas 1876 and Hilary 1877 some of the very earliest of Oscar Wilde's published work. These are Mason <i>Wilde Bibliography</i> 72 73 and 74. These all predate Wilde's first separately published book <i>Ravenna</i> of 1878 and all three were later included in Wilde's <i>Poems</i> of 1881 or 1908. <br />W. H. Rolleston was among the other contributors as was Oscar's brother William. It appears that Rolleston had these issues bound himself and so the preliminary title and list of contributor leaves for the individual issues were retained. William McGee hardcover

Full dark green crushed levant morocco covers bordered in gilt enclosing a six-line gilt border. Spine with five raised bands decoratively framed and lettered in gilt in compartments gilt-ruled board edges multi gilt-lined turn-ins top edge gilt others uncut. With the bookplates of the renowned collector C. S. Ascherson dated 1897 and Paul Louis Weiller also a famous book collector and a great friend of J. Paul Getty on front paste-down. Housed in a felt-lined dark green cloth clamshell case spine with leather label lettered in gilt. A couple of tiny and unobtrusive minor stains on blank borders otherwise a clean copy in a wonderful and early if somewhat austere binding by the great firm of Zaehnsdorf.<br /> <br /> Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan A Play About a Good Woman was his "first successful dramatic production" and one of his many masterpieces Mendelssohn. His talent for astute adaptations of traditional comedic tropes like the long-lost child or mistaken motivations are utilized to full effect in this narrative. The four-act comedy was infamously first performed on 20 February 1892. In addition to pulling on popular stars to perform Wilde had the young men of his entourage arrive at the premier wearing green carnations in their buttonholes-something that scandalized attendees when in a metatheatrical moment one of the characters onstage appeared with one as well referencing its cost and symbolism for decadent immorality. Prim attendees were in fact surrounded by a generation of young men devoted to such aesthetic ideals and wearing the same flower.<br /> <br /> Mason 358. Elkin Mathews and John Lane unknown

Original salmon paper-covered flexible boards decorated in dark red.<br/> <br/> First Edition of this collection of four dark semi-comic mystery tales. "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" is an amusing but macabre tale if there can be such a thing about a young man who convinced by Lady Windermere's cheiromantist that he is doomed to commit murder does his best to do so prior to getting married -- out of a sense of duty to his fiancée. As one would expect Lord Arthur bungles his mission. In addition to the title story this book includes "The Sphinx Without a Secret" "The Canterville Ghost" and "The Model Millionaire." The binding of this title with decorations by Charles Ricketts is extremely delicate -- paper-covered flexible boards; although 1500 copies were issued we find this book to be quite uncommon and we have never seen a truly fine copy. In our experience THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY THE HOUSE OF POMEGRANATES and this title are the three Wilde first editions most difficuilt to find in collectible condition. This copy is close to near-fine with a bit of the darkening and mottling of the spine that is typical for this fragile book but with scarcely any actual wear. Mason 345.
