Preceded by the Brentano's edition circa 1898 though often considered the first American edition. This edition was published in two states the first in which the text appears on rectos only and some leaves are untrimmed; in the second the text is printed on rectos and versos: "Both editions that printed on one side and that printed on both sides are from the same type. It is therefore clear that they are not two independent editions but the one-side issue constitutes merely a kind of de-luxe variety while the two-sided is a cheaper popular version of the same edition" Horodisch pages 76-77. This copy comports with the first state with text printed one side only. A printer's binder's issue is extant as at least one leaf is hinged at the top edge. Is it possible that what Horodisch thought a deluxe issue is merely error some of which made it to the wild Issued by Benjamin R. Tucker the noted anarchist publisher and editor of the journal Liberty in which Tucker published the essay "The Criminal Jailers of Oscar Wilde" in 1895. Tucker and Emma Goldman were two of the few Americans to publicly defend Wilde during his trial George Haggerty Encyclopedia of Gay Histories and Cultures 2013 page 52. In publisher's two-toned cloth white over blue upper cover lettered and ruled in gilt unadorned spine. Some minor shelf wear white portion of cloth binding rather soiled and toned along spine short closed tear to title page fore-edge not approaching text old ink spot affecting first few leaves else interior fine. "A volume of short poems characterized by Oscar Wilde as 'verses full of sweet sadness and yet full of joy;' they were written by a young English friend of his of whom he speaks at length in his introduction" Publishers' Weekly October 7 1882. Rodd's dedication to Wilde reads: "To Oscar Wilde - 'Heart's Brother' - These Few Songs and Many Songs to Come." In addition to this effusive dedication "for which Wilde clearly was responsible the book was 'edited' by the omission of two poems Lucciole and Maidenhair.At the same time Wilde added nine of Rodd's poems which had not previously been collected" Mason p.185. In a letter to Thomas Mosher who reprinted this book Stoddart replies to Mosher's questions as to the number printed: "I think this deluxe issue was not over 250 copies." Housed in a custom case and chemise. Wilde's later work based on his two years hard labor at Reading Gaol for "gross indecency." Published under the pseudonym "C. 3. 3." for his cell block because the publisher feared having his name on the work would adversely affect sales. <br/><br/>The poem is based on a fellow inmate convicted of murdering his wife and generated one of the great lines from Wilde "Yet each man kills the thing he loves." Wilde continued to revise his plays until his death in 1900 but said that he had lost the joy of writing and would write no other new works. One of the rarest of this series of privately printed volumes produced by this Philadelphia sporting club and an unusual demonstration of the popularity of Oscar Wilde during his American tour of 1882. The verso of the title page includes a list of the 22 members of the cruise "The 'Wilde' Æsthetes of 1882" with the title in a floral heading giving them all first names of flowers and Wildean associations including: <br/>Sunflower SMITH Oscar's first love too poetical .<br/>Mignonette MOUSLEY Oscar's twin brother too fat for a Porpoise.<br/>Rhododendron RAUCH Oscar's great-aunt too much 'poke.'<br/>Woodbine WEHN Oscar's little sister too awfully nice.<br/>Petunia PACKARD Oscar's maid too much of a masher.<br/><br/>With the ticket of J.L. Mason/Millard gives an account of the circumstances which led to the faint state of the Shannon plates. A very good tight and clean copy. An extremely scarce book in the large-paper format. Mason 365. A Woman of No Importance was published simultaneously in two formats: small octavo the standard edition of 500 copies and quarto the "Large Paper" issue of 50 copies. While both constitute the first edition of A Woman of No Importance the large paper copies are decidedly rarer than the octavos; intended to be more exclusive and deluxe publications large paper formats were typically produced using higher quality materials lacked the publisher's advertisements and were printed in small print runs. Because they were intended as collectibles from publication large paper copies of Wilde's plays are exceedingly scarce. A Woman of No Importance is a four-act play that was first produced in London at the Haymarket Theatre on April 19 1893. Like many of Wilde's plays it satirizes the English upper-class and criticizes Victorian society. The title "a woman of no importance" refers to the character Mrs. Arbuthnot who bears the illegitimate son of Lord Illingworth. Although societal conventions deem her a sinful woman Wilde proves Arbuthnot a respectable widow who is rewarded with a son who treats women respectfully. In contrast Illingworth one of Wilde's archetypal dandy figures is rejected by his son and may of the women in the play making him a "man of no importance.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
