Contains January-June of 1854. WIlde's essay leads off the February issue and is pages 127-146. <br /> <br /> "When kitchened with "point" i.e. seasoned mollified with milk or softened by a drop of the crature' the like of the potato will never again be found for ‘rent-paying pig-feeding love-making child-breeding faction-fighting and country-dancing properties". WIlde father of Oscar was a polymath - a doctor census taker folklorist and social commentator. He represents as does this essay a conundrum. He sympathized with the Irish peasantry could see many of their troubles with clarity collected huge amounts of medical data on their suffering yet supported the insupportable English response to the famine. Even this essay filled with admiring prose for the people and culture essentially blames the starving masses for their problems - a lack of imagination culinary ingenuity stupid reliance on the bounty of the potato etc etc. Though while suggesting that the Irish have little imagination or knowledge gastronomically he does mention an impressive number of ways that potato is served. He even comes to the to call it paternalistic is to do an injustice to the concept of paternalism conclusion that " ‘Irish agriculture has been greatly benefited by the famine." No dust jacket as issued.</p><p>Published before well before Wilde's incarceration and trial and before his best known works such as "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" and "The Importance of Being Earnest". The fairy tales written for his children originally include "The Happy Prince" "The Nightingale and the Rose" "The Selfish Giant" "The Devoted Friend" and "The Remarkable Rocket."</p><p>Evidence of previous tape repair on spine exterior and front and rear boards with chipping and loss on spine. Interior tape repair on inner hinge and evidence of what appears to be a hastily removed book plate on front pastedown. Light soot or dirt smudging on portion of title page. Interior pages are good. Publisher's original pale salmon binding with gilt leaf stamping to panels. 152 pages. This copy is about VG with the usual slight fading to the gilt leaf. Boards clean and tidy with no noteworthy issues. There is a book-plate to the front paste-down of "Richard Buckle". No previous owner inscriptions. The spine has been sympathetically and skilfully re-backed in brown morocco with the title and author in gilt with leaf stamps blind-stamped in three places. Wilde's last play opened to great acclaim on Valentine's Day 1895 but was withdrawn after Wilde's failed libel suit against Lord Queensbury led to his arrest in April of that year. Two weeks later he received a card at his club accusing him of sodomy to which he responded with an ill-judged libel lawsuit that led to his downfall and imprisonment. By the time this book was published by Leonard Smithers one of his few remaining friends Wilde was dying in Paris his health broken by Reading Gaol. There are now statues to him in London and Dublin.
