"Die ersten Anfänge dieses Werkes greifen weit zurück. Es ist in der Klinik von Johannes v. Mikulicz begonnen dessen Lebensarbeit zu einem großen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung und der Chirurgie des Magenkarzinoms gewidmet war. Mikulicz wieder fühlte sich jederzeit als Schüler des großen deutschen Meisters der Magenchirurgie /Theodor Billroths dem und dessen Schule wir die Grundlagen danken auf der sich die moderne Magenchirurgie aufgebaut hat. Auch dem Andenken dieser großen Männer sei dieses Werk gewidmet. Durch den Drang der äußeren Verhältnisse mußte die in Breslau begonnene Arbeit längere Zeit ruhen; erst in der eigenen Klinik in Kiel konnte sie allmählich wieder in Angriff genommen werden wobei sich sehr bald herausstellte daß eine völlige Umänderung des Arbeitsplanes nötig war. Nur in engster Verbindung der pathologisch - anatomischen mit der klinisch-chirurgischen Betrachtung konnte das großangelegte Werk vollständig und praktisch wertvoll werden. Dazu bedurfte es aber eines Fachmannes und ausgebildeten Pathologen der zugleich als geschulter Kliniker in den klinischen und technisch wichtigen Fragen eigene Erfahrung hatte. Ich fand diesen Mitarbeiter in meinem langjährigen Assistenten Professor Konjetzny. Es hat ihn die Aufgabe gereizt den schwierigen pathologisch¬anatomischen Stoff bei dessen Formung die verschiedensten Probleme -der allgemeinen Pathologie in den Kreis der speziellen anatomischen Betrachtung einstrahlten in einer möglichst anschaulichen und verständlichen dem Kliniker nutzbringenden Art zu bewältigen. Die Kenntnis der Geschwulstmorphologie wird stets zu den Fundamenten praktisch-chirurgischer Tätigkeit gehören aber auch der wissenschaftlich arbeitende Kliniker kann sie nicht entbehren. Der Kenner der Morphologie ist sich der Grenzen wohl bewußt welche ihr als heuristischer Methode gesteckt sind; er weiß daß vieles abgeschlossen vorliegt daß aber die Morphologie noch in manchen Fragen prinzipieller Wichtigkeit ferner für die Fundamentierung gewisser biologischer Vorstellungen wichtige Mitarbeit zu leisten hat. Die Morphologie wird immer die conditio sine qua non für die objek¬tive klinische Beurteilung und für die Kritik der chirurgischen Behandlungsmethoden bleiben. Der Pathologe von Fach wird an unserer Darstellung manches- auszusetzen haben; manche wichtige Dinge werden ihm zu skizzenhaft gezeichnet erscheinen. Wir kennen diese Mängel unserer Darstellung sehr gut und haben es je länger wir uns mit dem Thema beschäftigt haben um so unangenehmer empfunden daß wir uns beschränken ja manchmal sogar Gedankengänge die in weiterer Verfolgung das Ganze mehr abgerundet hätten direkt abschneiden mußten. Aber wir glaubten uns an den zusammendrängenden Rahmen unserer Arbeit halten zu müssen weil wir ja in erster Linie klinischen Bedürfnissen gerecht werden wollten. Wir wenden uns als Kliniker an den wissenschaftlich und praktisch arbeitenden Chirurgen. Damit mußte die Darstellung der pathologischen Anatomie eine gewisse¬klinisch-chirurgische Orientierung bekommen; aber darin dürfte ja gerade der Wert des Buches für den Chirurgen liegen. Mit dem gleichen chirurgischen Eklektizismus wie im ersten Teil die pathologisch-anatomischen Fragen werden im zweiten die internistisch-klinischen behandelt. Hier wird vielleicht der innere Mediziner manches vermissen oder zu kurz behandelt empfinden. Auch hier sind wir nur auf die für den Chirurgen wichtigen Fragen tiefer eingegangen und überall haben wir die für das chirurgische Handeln bedeutungsvollen Gesichtspunkte hervorgehoben. Die Kriegsjahre und ihre Nach wehen haben die rüstig fortschreitende Arbeit unterbrochen und zum Stillstand gebracht. Den bereits vor dem Kriege fast vollständig fertiggestellten pathologisch¬anatomischen Teil unseres Werkes konnten wir aus äußeren Gründen nicht länger zurückhalten. Wir übergeben ihn der Oeffentlichkeit- ungern ohne den eng dazugehörenden klinischen Teil aber wir hoffen diesen bald folgen lassen zu können. Der vorliegende pathologisch-anatomische Teil stammt fast ganz von Konjetzny. Der Abschnitt über das Magenkarzinom war schon 1914 fertig gedruckt. Bei den übrigen Abschnitten konnten noch Korrekturen unter Berücksichtigung der neuen Literatur angebracht werden. Daß es umfassender pathologisch-anatomischer Studien und gründlicher Vorarbeiten bedurfte um das vorliegende Buch schreiben zu können wird dem Leser selbstverständlich erscheinen. Die pathologischen Untersuchungen erstreckten sich zunächst auf das sehr reiche Material der Kieler Chirurgischen Klinik das im eigenen Laboratorium bearbeitet worden ist. Außerdem stand uns das Material des Chemnitzer und des Kieler Pathologischen Instituts für Studienzwecke zur Verfügung. Herrn Geheimrat Nauwerck dem verehrten Lehrer Konjetznys Herrn Geheimrat Lubarsch weiland Herrn Geheimrat Heller sind wir für das weitgehende Entgegenkommen und für die Ueberlassung manchen interessanten Materials zu tiefgefühltem Dank verpflichtet. Die beigegebenen Abbildungen beziehen sich bis auf wenige Ausnahmen auf eigene Präparate. Article by Willy Hellpach sixth State President of Baden from 1928 in which he takes a pro-Jewish position pages 55–57 of the T. B. –Zeitung at a time of rising anti-Semitism. The article was published in 1928 the same year of the release of his book "Politische Prognose für Deutschland" and represents the end of the third chapter of the published book his writings on the Jewish Question Judenfrage. The article is published with an explicit disclaimer by the newspaper saying that despite of its disagreement with large parts of the article the sincere attempt of a man of Hellpach's statue to be fair to the Jewish population and culture deserves the publication in order to allow the reader to study Hellpach's position and come to its own conclusion.<br /> <br /> In view of the miniscule share of Germany's total population 62 million Germans and half a million Jews Hellpach calls it a delusional idea to manufacture a Jewish Question and stoke anti-Semitism with reference to ritual murders and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. This he claims "is an attempt to make the Jews a people within a people." Though he acknowledges the differences in appearance and social conduct Hellpach claims that these differences would hardly be noticeable if not for the concerted efforts to differentiate between the two groups. He emphasizes that a close look at the "milling masses" of Bavaria where anti-Semitism is cultivated at the Oktoberwiese for example one hardly would experience unfettered aesthetic joy for a noble race. Hellpach states that the physical differentiation is nothing but a tool of non-Jews wielded against the Jews pointing out that this approach has its roots in three facts: the Jew's steadfastness of kin their prosperity and the intellectual curiosity of Jews.<br /> <br /> Hellpach elaborates and gives examples of cases contributing to the division of the two ethnic groups cites the Russian revolution as a major reason for the unusually high immigration of Jews into Germany and concludes that politically in view of the self-image of Germany as a democracy there is only one way of dealing with the problem: the absolute equality of Jews in public life. A nation like Germany ought to be able to absorb the positive values of Jewish culture. These four pages include an open letter on the subject to Bruno Glaserfeld including the answer a contribution by Professor Grimme on "The Stones of Sinai" and a note on German-Jewish playwright Ernst Lissauer's successful premiere of his play "York" at the Cologne Theater.
