LUKE HOWARD FRS 1772-1864 was a British manufacturing chemist and an amateur meteorologist with broad interests in science. His lasting contribution to science is a nomenclature system for clouds which he proposed in an 1802 presentation to the Askesian Society. He was born in London the son of Robert Howard a lamp manufacturer and educated at the Quaker school in Burford Oxfordshire. He was a Quaker later converting to the Plymouth Brethren and became a pharmacist by profession. After serving an apprenticeship with a pharmacist in Stockport Cheshire he set up his own pharmacy in Fleet Street in 1793. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. He spent the years 1824 to 1852 in Ackworth Yorkshire West Riding . He died in Tottenham London. He had married Mariabella Eliott 1769-1852; they had several children including John Eliot Howard FRS chemist and botanist. 8vo. Both reviews open with an advertisement for the printer that reads "Office for the employment of women as compositors. Girls trained and employed for the last twenty years. Ladies and gentleman are invited to place their orders for printing where they will be executed by women in a style equal to the best. No slipshod work! No exorbitant prices!" The rest of both reviews is composed of articles news and reviews related to women's suffrage. Some titles include "Experiences Amongst Chinese Women" "The Political Position of Women in Canada." Together the two speak to the level of organization as well as the international focus of the movement as women collaborated across countries and continents reporting on successes and obstacles bolstering support for the cause by keeping readers well informed. Stephenson R.N. Wood engravings. An original copy complete with 20 woodcuts plus maps and illustrations. Good clean condition. Page edges slightly nibbled but hardly surprising considering the age of this newspaper. The British Arctic Expedition 1875-1876 leader Sir George Strong Nares was sent by the Admiralty for an attempt on the North Pole by Smith Sound and to explore the coasts of Greenland and adjacent lands. Sailing from Portsmouth in two ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery Henry Stephenson the expedition was unsuccessful in its attempt to reach the pole. This issue contains the text of President Jefferson's Message to Congress of Nov. 8th. In his speech Jefferson discusses relations with foreign powers including the Delaware and other Indian tribes the Louisiana Purchase; the United States Navy; and the federal budget. Critical of Jefferson Croswell would later be tried for libel and defended before the Supreme Court by Alexander Hamilton. The publication of this weekly newspaper would continue through 1807. unknown

Davenport & Company issued the 'Newbern Daily Progress' and 'Newbern Weekly Progress' from 1853 until some time in 1862. As the area came under Union control it re-emerged as a newspaper run by a staff of Union soldiers and pro-Union in content. Hutchinson: NEW BERN Arcadia Publishing 2000 p.15. <br /> This issue was printed after the Union captured New Bern. George Mills Joy the Army's Recruiting Officer is listed as the new editor. Among the many advertisements is one signed in type by Joy himself: FREEMEN OF North Carolina Rally to the Support of the Stars & Stripes!" <br /> This issue prints war news and adjudications by the Provost Court mostly on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. This is the second edition published two years after the first and certainly the better one being the first to contain the numerous tinted lithographed plates. About very good in the publisher's blind-tooled red cloth with gilt detail on the spine. Some inartful but not disfiguring coloring-in to some chipped areas on the spine extremities. This copy lacking the folding frontispiece and one plate "View of Morrow from the South" but otherwise complete and with five plates not noted in the list of illustrations all in the Cleveland area "Cleveland Station" "West Branch Rocky River Near Olmsted Station" "East Branch Rocky River Berea Station" "Elk Creek" and "Grand River Near Painesville Station". The list of illustrations calls for 28 plates including the map. While we have 26 of the 28 the 5 extra yield a total of 31 plates. Thus while incomplete still a desirable and very "Cleveland" copy of this important image-driven guide for rail travelers in Ohio. The author goes on tangents for example spending more than two pages discussing the general history of the Mormons as the guide passes through Kirtland but these digressions seem to be in some sense the point--offering diversion to the weary traveler. A pamphlet supporting strategies for the expansion of women's employment opportunities. It outlines current obstacles to women's work such as hostility from male employees: "Women however cannot be employed in England in this manner because of the jealousy of their fellow workmen. If a master were to employ women in any part of the business the whole of his workmen would strike at once." The document also lists sad consequences of the current work climate: "Workhouses were found to be overcrowded with able-bodies females while charities were besieged with women praying to be provided either with employment or bread." Stain to upper left edge front. Toning to last page. Light pencil marks in margin. Very good condition.
