Both reviews open with an advertisement for the printer that reads "Office for the employment of women as compositors. Girls trained and employed for the last twenty years. Ladies and gentleman are invited to place their orders for printing where they will be executed by women in a style equal to the best. No slipshod work! No exorbitant prices!" The rest of both reviews is composed of articles news and reviews related to women's suffrage. Some titles include "Experiences Amongst Chinese Women" "The Political Position of Women in Canada." Together the two speak to the level of organization as well as the international focus of the movement as women collaborated across countries and continents reporting on successes and obstacles bolstering support for the cause by keeping readers well informed. Support for O'Connell's Young Ireland movement caused its suppression in 1848. nd soon became the major voice for Irish nationalism; it was suppressed in 1848 but was revived and continued publication until 1900. This is a Very Good copy of the "Second Edition Revised" consisting of two sections 76 pages each bound together consisting of political songs and ballads originally published in the newspaper. The Scots may go to war to the sound of the pipes; the Irish go singing ditties and ballads! VERY SCARCE. Green cloth binding stamped in the blind and filled with gilt. Irish harp on the front cover. The binding is worn but remains sound; the text is clean and still very bright and supple. Decorative endpapers. The second section is dated earlier 1844. Full Title: A Narrative of the Endeavours made to reach The North Pole by the Officers and Crews of H.M.S. "Alert" and "Discovery" under the supervision of Capt. G.S. Nares R.N. and Capt. H.F. Stephenson R.N. Wood engravings. An original copy complete with 20 woodcuts plus maps and illustrations. Good clean condition. Page edges slightly nibbled but hardly surprising considering the age of this newspaper. The British Arctic Expedition 1875-1876 leader Sir George Strong Nares was sent by the Admiralty for an attempt on the North Pole by Smith Sound and to explore the coasts of Greenland and adjacent lands. Sailing from Portsmouth in two ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery Henry Stephenson the expedition was unsuccessful in its attempt to reach the pole. Hardback rebound in half leather with contrasting title label to spine. 32 × 21.5cm viii 1048pp. The Building News and Engineering Journal was established in 1854 and became one of the principal sources of architecture building and restoration of the Victorian age. Illustrated throughout with double page drawings full single page drawings architectural plans and smaller drawings within the text this journal documented and recorded buildings throughout Great Britain as well as occasionally overseas. The eight page index at the start gives a good idea of the number of illustrations and topics. Among the impressive illustrations are: a building on Wigmore Street double spread St John's Schools Chester single Artizans Dwellings Notte St Plymouth single architectural street fronts in Nottingham new municipal offices double Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museum single New Hotel Bush Hill Park Enfield useful furniture by Sheraton sculptured figure work by Viollet le Duc both singles staircase decorations by Jeffrey & Co double and this is a fraction of the illustrations. The text includes articles building news notices and adverts projects questions the text to each page printed in triple columns. This copy has the ownership stamp to the ffep of William Puttick Architect & Surveyor of Prince Albert Chambers Brighton. Condition: The leather binding and boards are fairly heavily rubbed and worn with some lifting to the cloth of the upper board at the fore-edge. The title page is foxed and light scattered foxing throughout but remaining in strong readable condition. The inner binding is secure. One thing to note on the plates: although they are bound in the correct groupings they are not always in order so you may see offsetting to a plate which isn't opposing but having checked where this has happened the plate that has left the offsetting is present within a few pages either side. This would have happened when the rebinding was done. A very heavy book at nearly 4kg. Further images are available on request.
