En la Memoria Albear realizó un estudio de los antecedentes y las posibilidades de aprovechamiento de los acueductos anteriores efectuó un cálculo de la dotación de agua para la ciudad valoró las dificultades para lograr la obra de captación en Vento y propuso el trazado del canal hasta el depósito.</p><p>Atendiendo a la extraordinaria complejidad de la obra y a las dificultades de su ejecución en el convulso período de la >Guerra de los diez años Albear elaboró y presentó en 1876 dos nuevos documentos: la "Memoria del Proyecto de depósito de recepción y de distribución de las obras del Canal de Vento" y la "Memoria del Proyecto de la distribución del agua de Vento en La Habana". En la primera valoraba los aspectos relativos a la ubicación altura capacidad y dimensiones del depósito así como otros aspectos tecnológicos; mientras que en la segunda se argumentaban las condiciones requeridas para un buen sistema de distribución dividido en dos partes interior y exterior así como las particularidades y aportes de cada una de ellas.</p>La inauguración del Acueducto de Albear denominado finalmente así tras la muerte de su artífice el 22 de octubre de 1887 no ocurriría hasta seis años más tarde el 23 de enero de 1893 en medio de condiciones políticas y económicas sumamente adversas plagadas de dificultades no sólo topográficas y tecnológicas sino incluso higiénicas en momentos en que las llamadas "fiebres de Vento" diezmaban a sus constructores. La etapa final de las obras a cargo de la firma Runkle Smith and Co. de Nueva York y encabezada por el ingeniero Sherman Gould por la parte norteamericana fue dirigida de acuerdo con los proyectos originales por un discípulo y continuador de Albear el coronel de ingenieros >Joaquín Ruiz. On tobacco: "'A Victim of the Weed' is desirous of knowing whether he can at once abandon his pipe and segars or must part company in a gradual manner. Our advice is to desist immediately and entirely from the use of tobacco in every form and in any quantity however small" 220. On race: "The differences in this respect are primitive in the different races; the mucous body or varnish which constitutes the layer between the true skin beneath and the outer covering or cuticle being white or nearly so in the European or Caucasian races; yellowish in the Mongul or African; and black in the African" 146. Also in the act was a clause allowing emancipation of slaves in the Confederacy that lived in areas of Union occupation. Most of the rest of the text on both pages are small articles on Civil War battles and political news in the Confederacy. 1870D11031England 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good. England Kent and Norfolk counties: c. 1871-1874. 8vo 175 x 115mm; 61 numbered pages in the hand of Charles W. Prescott detailing his various hunting excursions around the Kent countryside. Prescotts ownership inscription on front free-endpaper is dated 1871. His entries are easily read and cover Prescotts adventures on hunting hares with a skulk of foxes writing Found another in the same field ran her straight back to Old Park round the pond and the pack hunted her beautifully . Dec. 16 1871. The hunts took place over sprawling village and countryside or as he describes hop-gardens hills and ploughs of land in the Herne Bay area of Kent England. Many entries are headed by recognizable locations; Stroud Park Broomfield Hilsborough Wolston Heath and Chislet Mill and are dated with month and sometimes year. Only a portion of the way full his entries span about three years the first dated: Oct. 19 71 Stroud Park and last March 25 1874. Contemporary black morocco marbled endpapers and marbled endpapers with original brass clasp faint splitting at lower hinge of first few leaves strengthened at endpapers corners rubbed otherwise in very good shape especially considering it was wielded around so much of the Kentish countryside. Prescott makes many personal anecdotes about his day noting things in his surroundings like scent moderate or adding his opinions we could not kill I think we should have but the sun was too hot. Prescott often ends the entries with jotting down the days weather as something like very indifferent but as good as could be expected with a very cold east wind or simply stating Frost. It is evident from Prescotts personal asides that he was a vigilant huntsman quite dedicated to the task. Further personal glimpses reveal a record of his horses charming names including Salt Fish and Molly Malone. At the time Prescott was taking these notes Herne Bay area and the Kentish villages would have been teeming with people. The Victoria era was one of prosperity when elite English folk flocked to popular destinations to partake in their favorite pastimes. From 1873 on in the journal Prescott notes he was hunting with Pytchley by writing their name in parentheses. The Pytchley hunt is an organization originally based in Northamptonshire in formation as early at the 1630s. The organization is still active today. Pytchleys website notes that from 1819-1873 right as Prescott began with Pytchley for one year the Althorp and Pytchley countries were hunted by one pack with a second pack established at Brigstock. Prescott was part of the famous hunt organization at a time when it was amid significant change and expansion. His notes may keep further clue of such growth. While the huntsman himself may be unknown to history the anecdotal evidence in Prescotts diary gives us a glimpse of the Victorian man fond of his sport. <br/><br/> hardcover

Jones under the auspices of the Anti-slavery Society of the City & County of Philadelphia. This copy with dated 1864 pencil ownership markings of "J.E. Jones" this possibly being the publisher's spouse the reformer abolitionist and suffragist Jane Elizabeth Jones née Hitchcock; 1816-1896. The paper's contents are devoted almost entirely to exposure of the injustices of the southern slave system with excerpts from Southern papers quoted and sharply rebuked by Jones' editorial comments. This issue also includes a brief notice of the progress of the recently-founded city of Houston Texas which now contained ".about 3000 people two hundred buildings four hotels thirteen retail stores and one wholesale establishment." The extracts quoted in this issue are generally dated from March April and May of 1837 leading us to suggest a May-June date for this issue.<br /> <br /> It is unclear how many issues of Facts for the People appeared. The only recorded example for a physical copy is at AAS which holds two unspecified issues with the annotation "sparse holdings." Not in LCP Afro-Americana. Not in Blockson. While the writer of this book remains unnamed flipping through the pages offers an intimate look into their thoughts ideas and reading habits. Writings in this book range from the political "The paper money system is a system of murder as well as robbery" to the thoughtful "An artichoke and a pineapple have the same shape but what a difference in flavor!" to the biting "Women have such a tedious manner of telling a story." The latter half of the book is entitled "Memorandum" and appears to be mostly concerned with matters of business. There quotes and verses of poems that the writer found inspiring such as an excerpt from Voltaire: "The art of instructing succeeds better than the art of lampooning because satire dies with those who are its victims but.virtue is immortal." Other excerpts include "The universe appeared as a vault wherein true comfort was entombed; and the sun himself as a lamp to show the gloomy horror of a guilty mind." "One of the Roman emperors sent to buy the pillow of a man that was greatly in debt yet could sleep sweetly." "Of all the tyrannies on humankind the worst is that which persecutes the mind." "Many prose writers dislike wit as eunuchs dislike love." "On Monday evening Mr. Brougham is reported to have made a motion for the diminution of the influence of the crown in a speech which the Times calls the greater parliamentary effort this __. If instead of the greatest the Times had called it the longest that judicious paper would have been for once right.we have heard that the hon. member spoke for three hours & a half." Fascinating journal that offers a detailed view into everyday life two hundred years ago. Delicate pages are intact with expected tanning.
