Seymour. 3 Volumes bound as one 1- The Real Devil's Walk pp34 plus engraved frontis 6 full page illustrations by Robert Cruikshank with vignettes throughout text. An interesting work believed to be a revised version of "The Devil's Thoughts" 1799 but later revised with a letter appearing in the February 14th edition of the Morning Post 1830 with the claim by one R. C. Porson that the poem "The Devil's Walk" had been actually written by his deceased uncle "Professor Porson".2_ The Devil's Progress pp67 with engraved b/w frontis plus 4 full page b/w engravings and two vignettes designed by R. Seymour and engraved by Evans and Welch. This being another satire expanded from "The Devil's Thoughts" . 3-The Ancient and Modern History of the Devil this final part is missing it's title pages and preface but appears to be complete in two parts. Part one- Ancient history pp1-118 in 10 chapters . Part 2- Modern History pp119-264 in 11 chapters. It states on final page" Printed by J. Bailey 116 Chancery lane". 12mo although the poetry pieces are a smaller size paper. Contemporary binding of half brown calf over marbled boards with 5 tooled gilt lines and the title of "The Devil" to spine in good condition with some rubbing to boards rubbing to edges and leather. Inside hand written title page to history of the devil at beginning of book and old catalogue entry for "the devil's walk" to front pastedown. There is a little foxing and toning throughout but generally all pages in very good condition for their age in a tight solid binding. A very interesting item. Scarce. Illustrated with folding plates. Volume II of 'The Practical Mechanic's Journal' this volume dating from April 1849 to March 1850.An interesting journal dating from the Industrial Revolution noting the developments of the science of mechanics.Illustrated with eighteen plates many of which are folding.Collated complete.Including articles on the principles of suspension bridges Baggs' atmospheric railway the death of Isambard Kingdom Brunel navigating in the Arctic the manufacture of sulphuric acid train velocity and numerous other subjects. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip and board perimeters. Small loss to back strip head. Head of rear joint starting with board firmly held. Philadelphia 1862.<br/> <br/> On the front page in the first one and half columns on the left and concluding in two full columns on the last page is an article on the February 5 1862 United States Senate vote to expel Senator Jesse Bright of Indiana who was the most senior Democrat in the Senate. On March 1 1861 Senator Bright wrote a letter of introduction for Thomas B. Lincoln a Texas arms dealer. The letter was addressed to Jefferson Davis. In July 1861 Lincoln was captured with the letter by Union troops as he attempted to enter the Confederacy. Senator Bright was accused of being a traitor because of the letter. The proceedings of the Senate and impressions of the vote by Senators are included in the article. Senator Bright was expelled by a vote of 32 to 14. The yeas and nays votes with each Senator listed are on the front page. Jesse Bright was the fourth Senator from a Union state to be expelled during the Civil War.<br/> <br/> unknown

This is the second edition published two years after the first and certainly the better one being the first to contain the numerous tinted lithographed plates. About very good in the publisher's blind-tooled red cloth with gilt detail on the spine. Some inartful but not disfiguring coloring-in to some chipped areas on the spine extremities. This copy lacking the folding frontispiece and one plate "View of Morrow from the South" but otherwise complete and with five plates not noted in the list of illustrations all in the Cleveland area "Cleveland Station" "West Branch Rocky River Near Olmsted Station" "East Branch Rocky River Berea Station" "Elk Creek" and "Grand River Near Painesville Station". The list of illustrations calls for 28 plates including the map. While we have 26 of the 28 the 5 extra yield a total of 31 plates. Thus while incomplete still a desirable and very "Cleveland" copy of this important image-driven guide for rail travelers in Ohio. The author goes on tangents for example spending more than two pages discussing the general history of the Mormons as the guide passes through Kirtland but these digressions seem to be in some sense the point--offering diversion to the weary traveler. Howes O52; Thomson 887. With strong recent auction records we have priced the book accordingly at about 1/3 its natural price were the frontispiece present. Ohio State Journal Company hardcover

This paper was also an anti-Slavery paper. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia: The New England Non-Resistance Society was an American peace group founded at a special peace convention organized by William Lloyd Garrison in Boston in September 1838.1 Leading up to the convention conservative members of the American Anti-Slavery Society and the American Peace Society expressed discomfort with Garrison's philosophy of "non-resistance" and inclusion of women in public political activities. After conservative attendees opposing Garrison walked out of the convention in protest those remaining formed the New England Non-Resistance Society.citation needed<br /> <br /> The Society condemned the use of force in resisting evil in war for the death penalty or in self-defense renounced allegiance to human government and because of the anti-slavery cause favored non-union with the American South.citation needed The New England Non-Resistance Society was one of the more radical of the many organizations founded by William Lloyd Garrison adopting a Declaration of Sentiments of which he was the principal author pledging themselves to deny the validity of social distinctions based on race nationality or gender"2 refusing obedience to human governments and opposing even individual acts of self-defense.3 In the Society's Declaration of Sentiments Garrison wrote "any person without distinction of sex or color who consents to the principles of this Constitution may become a member and be entitled to speak at its meetings."1 The Society rejected loyalty to any human government; one historian has described the Non-Resistance Society's "basic outlook as that of philosophical anarchism".45. Disbound light wear and several short closed tears at outer margins Very Good. <br /> <br /> A Civil War illustration of wishful thinking: "Your correspondent has this moment - half-past five o'clock P.M. - received a special despatch from a reliable source dated Louisville Kentucky Sept. 5 couched in the following language which confirms the announcement of the death of Jeff. Davis first made in this correspondence on Tuesday last:- 'Positive advices received here this morning on Davis' death.' A special messenger from Fortress Monroe who arrived here to-day announces that flags have been flying at half-mast along the rebel lines for several days and information was received at the fortress that it was in consequence of the death of Jeff Davis."<br /> A source from Richmond stated that Davis had a serious illness and "little hope was entertained of his recovery." This is then followed by a biographical sketch of the provisional Vice President Alexander H. Stephens under the heading "THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY."
