All edges are gilt. Very minor bumping and minor fraying. <em>Prachtausgabe</em> splendor edition. One of the illustrators is Ersten Deutschen Künstlern a foremost German artist. The publisher put together a committee of Germany's top nineteenth-century romantic painters historic illustrators and wood-carvers. These artists individually illustrated specific poems scenes and dramatic moments throughout the volume. The pictures are incredible.
