1948878V43London: George G. Harrap 1948. Hardback. Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 5.5". Joan Hassall. The second impression published of this edition in 1948 with a rather good dust wrapper. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. Cranford is an episodic novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. It first appeared in the Household Words. It was then revised and published in book form in 1853.Cranford is partly based on Knutsford the town in which Gaskell grew up. It is inspired by rural town life of class snobbery. Gaskell fictionalizes her childhood observations to understand the role of class within society. The second impression of this edition. Publisher's note: The first impression of this edition of Cranford was published in 1940 but most of it was destroyed by enemy fire during the Blitz. This is the second impression of that edition. Accompanied by 23 wood engraving by Joan Hassall. It includes twenty vignettes and three plates. Bound in the original cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Slight loss to the head tail and front corners of the dust wrapper. Edge wear to the flyleaf. The boards are bright and clean. Internally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with marginal age toning. Fine George G. Harrap hardcover
