The story filled with Freudian references deals with the romantic obsession of an abortionist with one of his patients leading finally to her death and his suicide - almost needless to say this was hardly the drink of choice for Americans in the Great Depression; the print run must have been small and sales smaller still as today the book is unexpectedly scarce in commerce and rarely found in nice condition. From 1917 Arnold Zweig soldier since 1915 was a member of the press department of Commander-in-Chief East. There the secular Jew Zweig came into contact with Eastern Jewry leaving a lasting impression on him. In Lithuania which was occupied by the Germans since 1915 he met the graphic artist Hermann Struck who was a religious Zionist. When Poland annexed the district of Vilnius and broke terror over the Jews Struck and Zweig found themselves in a gesture of accusatory pity in the common work.
