The opening congress of the WPC condemned the atom-bomb and the American invasion of Korea. It followed the Cominform line recommending the creation of national peace committees in every country and rejected pacifism and the non-aligned peace movement. It was originally scheduled for Sheffield but the British authorities who wished to undermine the WPC refused visas to many delegates and the Congress was forced to move to Warsaw. British Prime Minister Clement Attlee denounced the Congress as a "bogus forum of peace with the real aim of sabotaging national defence" and said there would be a "reasonable limit" on foreign delegates.<br /> <p>. unknown

London 26 December 1937 17.9x22.9cm one leaf. Autograph letter signed by Stefan Zweig to Alfred Cortot two pages on one sheet written in violet ink. An outstanding autograph letter in which the avid collector informs his friend Alfred Cortot of his acquisition of unpublished manuscripts of Wagner. Alfred Cortot himself owes his career as a conductor to his early discovery of the German composer. Cortot shared with Zweig his ""almost tyrannical bewitchment suffered with as much intoxication as fervor"" for the composer. Zweig who spoke of his collection as ""more worthy of surviving me than my own works"" The World of Yesterday: Memories of a European 1942 recounts for his friend the details of this incredible discovery of hundreds of forgotten leaflets including Wagner's intimate correspondence handwritten scores and excerpts from opera librettos including The Flying Dutchman The Sublime Fiancée or Bianca and Giuseppe Die Feen Das Liebesverbot The Ban on Love and a lost orchestral version of Rule Britannia. In December 1937 as he fled the Nazi regime and settled in London Zweig became fascinated by the archives of a time when intellectual Europe was living in perfect syncretism. The writer takes a nostalgic look at the manuscripts of Wagner who like him spent his youth travelling through the capitals of Europe: ""I was extraordinarily fortunate to be able to get my hands on a whole lot of Richard Wagner's musical and literary manuscripts from his early period Leipzig Magdeburg Riga and Paris during a short stay in Vienna"". Among these precious manuscripts is the extremely rare orchestral arrangement of the patriotic song Rule Britannia which had been missing for more than sixty years. Sharing his passion for Wagner with his friend the pianist Cortot Zweig announced his discovery with the wonder so familiar to collectors when faced with an exceptional find: "". the manuscript is the only one of its kind in the world that has been preserved. It contains things that will be of special interest to you for example the complete translation 60 pages of the French version unpublished I believe of the text of the ""Liebesverbot"" entirely in Wagner's hand as well as the manuscripts of a vaudeville song ""Descendons la Courtille"" which he performed in his darkest moments . almost thirty pieces of the highest interest and precisely from the rarest period. The letter is a fascinating account of Zweig's parallel life which had earned him a reputation as an accomplished collector. His collection also inspired one of his most beautiful short stories The Invisible Collection die Unsichtbare Sammlung and a pioneering essay in the Deutscher Bibliophilen Kalender The Autograph Collection as an Art. His hundreds of historical musical and literary autographs from the Middle Ages to the 20th century were carefully catalogued and collected in the library-museum of his house in Kapuzinerberg: ""In this library a 'place of worship' he also exercises a real activity as an expert in autographs . . Despite not wanting to write another memoir Zweig was inspired to write the book whilst in voluntary exile in London after he came across an eyewitness account of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in the British Museum Reading Room. During a brief return to Vienna in 1934 and no longer able to publish with his German publisher Zweig "persuaded Herbert Reichner the editor of the Austrian journal Philobiblon to set up his own publishing house with Zweig as his flagship author" Dove p. 47. Maria Stuart appeared a year later and became an instant best-seller; by the end of the year it had been translated into 16 languages. The British edition translated by his collaborators Eden and Cedar Paul appeared in October and "assured Zweig's reputation in Britain" Dove p. 56. A wonderfully illustrated first edition copy of this celebration of the work of Ephraim Moses Lilien in the original German. One of 1000 Limited Edition copies printed of first edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. An important and uncommonly found work celebrating the art of Ephraim Moses Lilien 1874-1925 an art nouveau illustrator and printmaker who is sometimes considered first Zionist artist. He was notable for the Jewish themes in his art and for his influence on the Bezalel school art movement. This work is introduced by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig 1881-1942 who in the 1920s and 1930s was one of the most popular authors in the world. The work contains numerous reproductions of Lilien's bookplates borders and illustrations as well as a portrait of Lilien with a facsimile of his signature. 'In Rosenketten' has been tipped in by a previous owner possibly replacing the original reproduction of this work printed in the book. Further tipped-in illustrations created by Lilien from a previous owner to pages 59 60 61 214 215 and 302. One tipped-in illustration obscures a different illustration printed in the book another obscures a title of a work; the rest are tipped-in to blank pages. This book is otherwise complete which is unusual for this work. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally generally smart though faded to the spine with small tears to the head and tail of the front joint. Shelf wear to the joints and extremities. Front hinge is starting and rear hinge is slightly strained but both are firmly held. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. 'In Rosenketten' has been tipped in by a previous owner possibly replacing the original reproduction of this work printed in the book. Dagover's name is in blue manuscript ink on the front board then again with her German address on the front endpaper then only her name once again on the title page. With Dagover's manuscript corrections to the text on virtually every recto and when a rewrite of a passage was required on the verso to the of a given typescript passage on the recto. <br /> <br /> Typescript is accompanied by the resulting recording by Dagover the original German issue by Deustsche Grammophon released in 1963. <br /> <br /> One of the most famous works by Zweig an Austrian Jew who was a passionate collector of autograph manuscripts maintained close friendships with the likes of Sigmund Freud and Richard Strauss and whose prose took on the dual concerns of daily life and the impact of politics on everyday people. This novella is an outwardly simple drama of a single day in a woman's life an English widow who becomes uncontrollably attracted to a gambling diplomat during an evening in Monte Carlo. She is quickly reeled into his very troubled life and realizes her error too late.
