Large paper copy.Uniformly bound in full diced calf.Volume II bound with the original half title and two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.Six plates to Vol. I and six plates to Vol. II. Collated complete. Oberon is a faeire king in the lore of Medieval and Renaissance Europe and features heavily in European literature. This poem tells the tale of how Huon duke of Guienne becomes embroiled in a quarrel between Oberon and his queen Titania. This rendering by William Sotheby a famed translator and Romantic poet held in high regard by various well known figures of the day such as Byron and Wordsworth.This copy previously owned by English publisher and translator Roger Senhouse a peripheral member of the Bloomsbury Group of writers intellectuals and artists. Uniformly bound in full diced calf. Externally rubbing to the extremities and cracking to the joints which are starting but firm. Minor handling marks to the boards. Bookplate of one Roger Senhouse as well as a bookplate bearing an animal head engraving and initials. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with occasional offsetting and spots largely concentrated to plates and facing pages. Good Printed by W. Bulmer and Co for T. Cadell and W. Davies hardcover

Die bibliographische Erfassung dieser Werkausgabe ist trotz der ausführlichen Arbeit von Günther/Zeilinger unbefriedigend. Es soll sich um eine Titelauflage der früheren Werkausgabe handeln was Günther/Z. nicht erwähnen. Außerdem sind die ersten Bände teils auf 1855 datiert teils gibt es aber auch Exemplare die auf 1854 datiert sind was Günther/Z. pauschal ohne Erklärung angeben. - vgl. Günther/Z. 9. Wood-engraved vignettes and composite illustration the upper portion dominated by a dramatic scene of equestrian and trapeze performance by Zæo Mme Wieland. Old folds light toning and handling creases; small edge chips at left; short closed tears at fold intersections and one small internal tear at right; remnants of early mounting on the verso. Overall very good for a working circus programme of this size and age. Printed in Italian this programme lists the acts for the evening performance including human pyramids equestrian displays clowns acrobats and in the second part Zæo's featured trapeze and aerial "funambulismo" act together with pantomime and strongman turns. Harry Wieland was a German-born circus proprietor active across central and southern Europe in the 1870s-1880s operating large travelling companies that combined equestrian display acrobatics pantomime and modern aerial work in the manner of contemporary continental circuses rather than the older British fairground tradition. His wife performing under the single name Zæo was the star attraction of the enterprise and is here prominently billed with a suite of aerial feats on trapeze and rope as well as being illustrated in the top left hand corner. .
