A very scarce first edition of Francis Hope's English translation of German poet Christoph Martin Wieland's Gandalin oder Liebe um Liebe. Christoph Martin Wieland 1733 - 1813 produced novels and poetry influenced predominantly by classic Latin and Greek literature. His early work was largely concerned with themes of spirituality whilst his later writings are more romantic in tone. One of his lesser-known poetical works Gandalin was first published in 1776. In a full calf binding with gilt decoration and embossing to the boards. Externally smart though there is some rubbing to the boards and extremities. Internally firmly bound.
