This volume constitutes the first collected edition of Keats and only the second collected works of Coleridge & Shelley although only volume 1 issued in 5 parts of the 1826 edition of Shelley's works was issued and the edition was not completed and contains works published here for the first time from all three poets. Each poets work is preceded by a short life of the author. The memoir of Keats is by Leigh Hunt. Although Keats' literary executor Charles Armitage Brown disliked Hunt's portrayal of his friend his own account of Keats life was not ready in time for this edition and would not see publication for another 108 years in 1937. He did however send some unpublished poems in his possession for inclusion in the volume. The memoir of Shelley was written by Mary Shelley who also helped the publication of this edition by allowing the publisher access to his papers. Although this volume was published by the Galignanis in Paris avoiding the British copyright and meaning no royalties would be due they did have the co-operation of family members and literary friends of all three poets when assembling this impressive volume.;. 1268602. Wikipedia: "Thomas Wentworth Higginson 1823 - 1911 was an American Unitarian minister author abolitionist and soldier. He was active in the American Abolitionism movement during the 1840s and 1850s identifying himself with disunion and militant abolitionism. He was a member of the Secret Six who supported John Brown. During the Civil War he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers the first federally authorized black regiment from 1862-1864. Following the war Higginson devoted much of the rest of his life to fighting for the rights of freed slaves women and other disfranchised peoples." Howeverm he is probably best remembered as the editor who worked American poet Emily Dickinson. This work includes a 15pp preface by Mary Sheeley and her Journal of a Six Weeks Tour Letters Descriptive of a Sail Round the Lake of Geneva and of the Glaciers of Chamouni. Also in volume two are a number of letters from Percy Shelley to Mary Shelley. The Percy Shelley material includes an essay on poetry philosophical speculations and the like. Full morocco slipcase and chemise. First edition published anonymously and one of Shelley's scarcest later publications. This copy has the title in the form with the colon after the main title. The lady addressed in the subtitle Emilia Viviani is generally regarded as the motivation for the poem's completion rather than its original inspiration as Grannis quotes Richard Garnett's observation that the poem was in its first draft before Shelley made her acquaintance. It was long asserted that the edition consisted of only one hundred copies but recent scholarship suggests a modestly larger edition perhaps on the order of three hundred copies. GRANNISS pp.65-7. First edition 8vo in 4s pp. xiv 104; bound without the initial blank leaf in later full blue straight-grain morocco double gilt-ruled borders on covers enclosing a blindstamped roll gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments gilt-lettered direct in 1 a.e.g.; nice copy. Printed in an edition of only 250 copies. Shelley had been fascinated by the lurid story of Beatrice Cenci and Guido's portrait of her as seen in the Columna palace at Rome and originally intended the latter to be copied as a frontispiece for this book. He worked exceptionally fast on his version of the tragedy starting in May and ending in August of his annus mirabilis the same year he wrote Prometheus Unbound The Masque of Anarchy and the 'Ode to the West Wind.' The book is excellently produced well printed on thick laid paper: "It has a few errors of the press incidental to the Italian compositors' ignorance of English . but on the whole it seems to me a preferable text to the second edition -- a text more like the absolute production of Shelley" Foreman.
