Pastedown with book label of Marion C. Walker; verso of title and one other leaf with small ink stamp of the Selbourne Library. Macdonald 29; ESTC R1595; Pforzheimer 324. Paper evenly toned throughout but fresh and a clean appealing copy inside and out.<br /><br />At the Revolution when Dryden lost his positions of Poet Laureate and Historiographer Royal he was more than usually compelled to accept remunerative literary projects like this panegyric written about a lady and for a patron he had never met. According to Macdonald "The countess daughter of Sir Henry Lee of Ditchley died on 31 May 1691 but the poem 'betwixt ill health some business and many troubles' was not published till nearly a year later." Some have suggested that much of Dryden's genius was lost to his public because of the constraints of making ends meet with poems like this one but it is testimony both to his poetic powers and stamina that he was able to infuse even wholly commercial work with beauty and dignity. Our copy once belonged to Hugh Selbourne 1906-73 a respected Manchester physician and a passionate bibliophile with a notable library strong in the sciences. He was the owner of virtually all of Robert Boyle's works and his care in choosing copies is reflected in the fact that his first printing of "The Sceptical Chymist" sold at Bonham's in 2015 for a remarkable £362500.</p> Printed for Jacob Tonson

Presumed second issue two lines of Latin verse on final page of this satirical poem lampooning the Earl of Shaftesbury. Small 4to: 1220pp. There are at least two issues: the first Macdonald 13.a.i lacks the Latin lines at the end. Recent hand-marbled stiff paper wrappers paper title label printed in black to front cover. An excellent example beautifully rebound and generally clean throughout. Macdonald 13.a.ii. Wing D2311. ESTC R17608. Pforzheimer 331. Ashley Library II pp. 84-85. Dryden's unsparing invective against the Whigs prefaced by a vigorous and plainspoken prose "Epistle to the Whigs." In 1681 the Whigs had a medal struck in Poland the Earl of Shaftesbury's head in profile on the obverse the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse to commemorate the release of one of their most prominent leaders who had been held in the Tower on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James to the throne. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: "Of all our Antick Sights and Pageantry / Which English Ideots run in crowds to see / The Polish Medall bears the prize alone: " In fact most of "Dryden’s masterpieces were written in the 1680s after the Titus Oates Plot had driven the nation into hysteria against the Catholic minority with the result that thousands were imprisoned and a number including Dryden’s cousin Lord Howard were executed. From the start Dryden ridiculed the Plot fomented by the radical Whigs with all the civilized disdain he was capable of in The Spanish Fryar 1680 Absalom and Achitophel 1681 and The Medall 1682." The first edition second issue with the second line of the imprint ending "in". This second issue is more common to see than the first issue of which only two examples were known to the bibliographer Macdonald.John Dryden wrote 'Religio Laici' as a response the Father Richard Simon's 'Histoire Critique due Vieux Testament'. In this text Dryden set out to address the issues in Simon's book such as his tendency to undermine Protestantism and other religious issues of the day such as Deism. Five years after Dryden published this poem however he converted to Roman Catholicism. Written in heroic couplets by Dryden during his tenure as Poet Laureate. Register runs as: 1 a3 b2 C2 B-C4 D6. Collated complete. Rebound in paper covered boards. Externally generally smart. Tear to the head of the front joint. Spine and extremities are age-toned. Light handling marks to the wraps. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small chips to the head and tail of the spine. Prior seller's note tipped-in to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. First Edition some mild age-staining and spotting throughout; modern grey boards paper label lettered in black on upper board one or two upper margins closely shaved else a crisp firm copy. Dryden's second-to-last play and according to MacDonald partially completed by Southerne. Its first performance should have been early in April 1692 but on the 9th it was prohibited; it was acted out on or before 16 April at the Theatre Royal. In his Dedication Dryden attributes the lifting of the ban to Rochester the dedicatee who had represented the drama to the Queen as 'wholly innocent of those Crimes which were laid unjustly to its Charge'. The Life of Cleomenes is supplied by Creech from Plutarch; see MacDonald 131. In this copy as often the Prologue and Epilogue appear before the 'Life'. CBEL II p.267; MacDonald 92.
