Wilke's face-to-face etched portraits of Shakespeare and Dryden are striking and lovely. The 13 color plates reproduce the mural Clark commissioned for the salon of his library in Los Angeles now a specialized research library. Clark's "Compliments of" slip with "Christmas 1929" printed in red tipped to front flyleaf. Mining magnate entrepreneur and one-time senator from Montana Clark 1839-1925 together with John Henry Nash issued a small series of literary editions accompanied by facsimiles of rarities in his collection and this is one such production. The facsimile reproduces his copy of the London 1678 first edition each bearing the reproduction bookplate on front pastedown of the Bridgewater Library from whose library Clark acquired his copy. Limited to seven hundred and fifty copies of which this is number seven hundred and three. The dramatic works of John Dryden an English poet literary critic translator and playwright who in 1668 was appointed England's first Poet Laureate. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. With the reopening of the theatres in 1660 after the Puritan ban Dryden began writing plays. Although his first play was not successful from 1668 on he was contracted to produce three plays a year for the King's Company in which he became a shareholder. He led the way in Restoration comedy with his best-known work being Marriage à la Mode. Volume one contains The Wild Gallant The Rival Ladies The Indian Queen and The Indian Emperor with prefatory notes an introduction and a chronology of dramatic poesie. Uniformly bound in the original attractive marbled boards with green cloth spines stamped in shiny gold. Spines are still a pleasing green -- only very slightly sun-faded see photo -- much less than usual for this set which is often seen with spines sunned to an ugly brown. Each volume has long been protected by a homemade clear plastic dust jacket -- all of which have done their job well resulting in NO fraying and almost NO rubbing. PLEASE NOTE: Vertical white lines in the photos are light reflected from the clear plastic dust jackets NOTon the books themselves. There are faint shadows at the corners of the front free endpapers from tape adhesive offset minor -- see photo. Otherwise all pages are fresh crisp and unmarked -- uncut and unopened apparently never read. NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. Each volume measures 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. This is number 457 of 750 standard sets another 50 having been being printed on Van Gelder paper. First edition of this nicely illustrated Studebaker dealer’s salesman manual detailing the very successful 1938 Studebaker models which featured the first full line-up of the streamlined designs of Helen Dryden in consultation with the equally famous contemporary industrial designer Raymond Loewy who began his contract with Studebaker in 1936. The 1938 Studebaker lines featured the State Commander President & Commander lines revamped by Loewy and Dryden with shrouded lantern-style headlamps called cathedral headlights modernizing of the Studebaker logo on the front cover and even though the US economy had backslid into a mild recession the 1938 sales year saw Studebaker climb up to 10th in new-car sales. Dryden 1883-1972 was an acclaimed woman artist earning over $ 100000 a year in the 1930’s when her designs first appeared with Studebaker. Dryden continued to work with Loewy at Studebaker until 1940 when she mysteriously drops from the public eye only to make a short appearance in a series of 1956 New York times articles on her dispute with the Welfare Department.
