Original cream paper-backed blue and cream marbled boards orange printed label ornamental decorations on spine uncut. First volume dampstained throughout some holes in title which is spotted some foxing binding of first volume damaged and lacking spine portion of spine with label laid in covers loosened volumes two and three with some rubbing of bindings and short tears of spines insect holes along bands some light spotting but generally the last two volumes very good with contemporary signature of John McVickar on endpapers. Two folding facsimile leaves vol. 2 following p. 342vol 3 following p.472. 3 vols. 8vo. John McVickar is rest recalled as an economist. He was one of the earliest teachers of political economy in the U. S. taught while he was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Columbia which he held from 1817 until 1857. In 1857 when Columbia brought in Francis Leiber to teach political economy McVickar was transferred to the Chair of Evidences of Natural and Revealed Religion a position he held until his retirement in 1864. From 1844 until 1864 he was also Army Chaplain at Fort Columbus in New York. He is also recalled as one of the founders of St. Stephen's College for Episcopal clergyman. He was the author of several works including the revised and greatly extended "Britannica" article by McCulloch "Outline of Political Economy "1825 "Hints on Banking"1827; and several others on finance and banking and a biography of Henry Hobart. Macauley in the Edinburgh Review 1831. Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject and brought to his task boundless curiosity persistence and zest. Boswell had been collecting material for this work since his first interview with Johnson in 1763 and was confident that his kind of biography "which gives not only a History of Johnson's visible progress through the world and of his publications but a view of his mind in his letters and conversations is the most perfect that can be conceived and will be more of a Life than any work that has ever yet appeared." He said too that: â€œA sanction to my faculty of giving a just representation of Dr. Johnson I could not conceal. Nor will I suppress my satisfaction in the consciousness that by recording so considerable a portion of the wit and wisdom of the brightest ornament of the eigteenth century I have largely provided for the instruction and entertainment of mankind.â€ If Boswell does indulge in a little harmless flattery to himself the concluding words of his preface are literally true for Boswellâ€™s Johnson as much as any other book â€œhas largely provided for the instruction and entertainment of mankind.â€ The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides is the famous account of Boswell and Johnsonâ€™s tour to the North in 1773 including some original poems by Johnson never before published and numerous â€œliterary anecdotes and opinions of men and books.â€ This tour proved to be inspirational for both men; Johnson published A JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND in 1775 and Boswell in addition to this work used his notes from the tour extensively in his LIFE OF JOHNSON published in 1791. John Wilson Croker 1780-1857 was a British statesman and author. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin where he graduated in 1800. Immediately afterwards he entered Lincoln's Inn and in 1802 he was called to the Irish bar. His interest in the French Revolution led him to collect a large number of valuable documents on the subject now in the British Museum. In 1809 Croker was appointed as secretary to the Admiralty. Many of his political speeches were published in pamphlet form. He was for many years one of the leading contributors on literary and historical subjects to the Quarterly Review with which he had been associated from its foundation. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography comments that "He had a wide appreciation of all varieties of literature and art which made him a valuable intermediary between the politicians and the public and he was an able writer lucid fluent and always well informed." "In 1831 Croker published a new edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson including the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides which was vindictively attacked by Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review but which remained the best edition until superseded by the work of George Birkbeck Hill" - DNB.
