Vol. 1 was inscribed by Neruda to Dolf Verspoor an early translator of Neruda's work into Dutch as follows: "Para / Dolf Verspoor / recuerdo / afectuoso de / Pablo / Neruda / 1949 / Paris / Quai / d'Orleans". In vol. 2 there is a handwritten note probably by Neruda on page 40 reading "Ici commence / Tentativa del / hombre / infinito". In his philosophical poem We Are Many Neruda offers the reader a brooding introspective narrative about his comically confused sense of self-identity and conflict of self. It is an unrhymed and unmetered free-verse poem which is in keeping with its very modern subject-matter—namely Neruda's saddening lack of self-knowledge in contradiction to ancient Greece's Delphic maxim “Know thyselfâ€. Throughout the poem Neruda expresses his rather comical inability to understand himself or even define himself in any meaningful way. This theme of a philosophical identity crisis and search for oneself is reinforced by the poem's broken architecture which is replete with seemingly self-contradictory assertions. This free-verse poem begins with two four-line stanzas but ends with a ten-line stanza—for a total of seven stanzas of varying and gradually increasing number of lines 4 4 6 6 7 8 10. It uses personifications metaphors hyperbole allegory self-parody and other similar poetic devices to communicate its philosophical theme and deeper meaning to Neruda's numerous readers. One of 500 copies numbered in Arabic an additional 20 numbered in Roman were not for sale. Folio 25 x 38 cm. 48 pages 7 full page woodcuts by José Venturelli. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943 however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it and began to publish his translations in January 1946 but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book scarce in commerce. Becco 84; Loyola 292 misdated as 1947. Original self wrappers printed in red gray and yellow spine cracked and professionally reattached lacking a small chip wrappers soiled and a dampstain affects the top edge of leaves throughout. Rare in the original wraps most first edition copies have been rebound. Just two thousand copies of this original edition were produced each containing 16 black and white photographic reproductions as here.<br /> <br /> Posted in Spain as a diplomat during the Spanish Civil War Neruda witnessed the destruction and transformation of Spain during these turbulent years. This is the first definitive edition of the poems including the Chambi photographs referenced in "The Latin American Photobook. A superior example rare in this condition. The Heights of Machu Picchu" has been called Pablo Neruda's greatest contribution to poetry—a search for the "indestructible imperishable life" in all things. Inspired by his journey to the ancient ruins Neruda calls the lost Incan civilization to "rise up and be born" and also empowers the people of his time. Nascimento unknown
1937125965<p>2 Vols. set : Vol.1 'Authors Take Sides on the Spanish War'. The sole UK printing published by Left Review London in 1937. The pamphlet BOOK is in Very Good condition. Original printed yellow and red card covers. Internally the 32 pages are staple bound and the binding remains tight. Just the merest hint of light rusting to the staples internally. Light spotting throughout due the quality of the paper stock used a little heavier in places. Free from inscriptions and erasures. There is some professional transparent reinforcement tape to the front and rear inner hinges where the covers have become detached from the spine but this is barely discernable. Some light edge wear to the spine ends of the thin card printed covers which are mildly toned in places but are remarkably clean for their age. A scarce survivor of what was a cheap production. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. A very scarce pamphlet containing contributions from 148 British and Irish authors on their personal stance on the Spanish Civil War. The question posed is: 'Are you for or against the legal Government and the People of Republican Spain Are you for or against Franco and Fascism' and is signed off by Aragon W. H. Auden Jean Richard Bloch Nancy Cunard Brian Howard Heinrich Mann Ivor Montagu Pablo Neruda Ramon Sender Stephen Spender and Tristan Tzara. The publisher states its limitations within a six penny pamphlet i.e. that it has indeed selected the responses likely based on its own motivation though it does say the responses herein are representative but more so from the weight of the authors themselves. Indeed it contains most of the powerhouse names of British and Irish literature; W. H. Auden Samuel Beckett who perhaps satirically simply writes UPTHEREPUBLIC! Cyril Connolly Alastair Crowley with his name misspelt C. Day Lewis Liam O Flaherty Ford Madox Ford David Garnett Victor Gollancz Aldous Huxley Storm Jameson John Lehmann Sylvia Pankhurst Herbert Read Stephen Spender Olaf Stapledon Leonard Woolf and many others. T. S. Eliot Ezra Pound Vera Brittain H. G. Wells and Vita Sackville-West among others declare themselves neutral the latter questioning the publication s terminology in the question regarding a legal government. And against the government appears Arthur Machen Edmund Blunden Evelyn Waugh and others. An extremely scarce pamphlet a rare survivor in all senses which gave audiences direct insights into ideas and worlds some authors seldom expressed themselves in and a hugely important booklet. This extremely scarce pamphlet is one of an edition of three thousand copies which sold out immediately on publication. JSIC reports 13 holdings at institutions. The sole USA printing published by the League of American Writers New York in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Stapled blue wraps with writers' names in white and titles in black.
