182921426Poughkeepsie: Isaac Platt 1829. Good overall. A Poughkeepsie imprint of a sermon delivered by the American philosopher who would later become president of Union College. Hickok 1798 - 1888 taught at a private school in Bethel Ct. graduated from Union College and studied theology by apprenticing himself to William Andrews and Bennet Tyler both of Connecticut. Hickok was ordained minister in 1824 at the Congregational Church in Kent Connecticut where he served as pastor until 1829. He then succeed Dr. Lyman Beecher at the Congregational Church in Litchfield Connecticut. He taught at Western Reserve College Auburn Theological Seminary and then Union College. He succeeded Eliphalet Nott as president of Union in 1865 and then retired to Amherst Mass where he continued to work with students & teachers of philosophy. 8vo 9pp. Toned chipped at edges. The front spine joint has cracking to the cloth starting at the top edge. There are smaller tears to the bottom front spine joint bottom rear spine joint and a very small one to the top rear spine joint affecting the cloth mainly and not the actual structure of the spine. The text pages are clean and bright. A previous owner has penciled his name and date on the half title page. "He took his degree at Union College in 1820. Until 1836 he was occupied in active pastoral work and was then appointed professor of theology at the Western Reserve College Ohio and later 18441852 at the Auburn Theological Seminary in Auburn New York. From this post he was elected vice-president of Union College and professor of mental and moral science. In 1866 he succeeded Dr. E. Nott as president but in July 1868 retired to Amherst Massachusetts where he devoted himself to writing and study. A collected edition of his principal works was published at Boston in 1875. Despite faults an excellent copy of this treatise by Hickock an atypical U.S. 'mental & moral philosopher' of the time whose complex position was a kind of ultimately religious neo-Kantianism as far as I can figure. He also authored a companion 'Empirical Psychology'. Apaprently extremely rare with no copies listed on major web-sites at time of listing. The copyright entry date verso t.p. is 1861 but other sources give 1st ed. as 1849 his first book. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins wove paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name title and a poem; blank tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by the poem Les trophées by José-Maria de Heredia reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work of art in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on par with the deluxe illustrated book. 1854P2946Paris: Pierre-Bertrand c.1854. Very Good. Notes: In 1846 the French government decided to send a mission to Persia an expedition led by the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to carry out further investigations. Laurens a young artist who had studied in the studio of the painter Paul Delaroche was employed to record the course of their journey in a series of images that after his return in 1849 were used to illustrate Hommaire de Hell's Voyage en Turquie et en Perse 4 vols and atlas 1854-60. Despite the rigours of the journey and an attack of fever Laurens filled several sketch-books with his drawings of the people and landscapes they encountered.
